So, last night was the party that FI's boss threw for us so that we could celebrate with our local friends. It was fun! Juuuust right. Very low key and not embarassing. About 35 or 40 people came and we all drank champagne and ate cake and chatted. I wondered if it was a little awkward for our hosts since they didn't know many of the guests in their home, but they really genuinely care about us, so I think they were happy to throw the party.
As the host predicted, we ended up with waaaaaay too much cake. We ordered a smaller version of this cake for 20 people (as the hosts recommended). But then I panicked and baked another one. The cake I baked was good, but really messy! It looked hilarious next to the professional one. A friend of mine described it as "the perfect amercian housewife cake." Haha? But I was glad he enjoyed it, in all its rustic glory. Then some of the guests brought a couple more cakes. So there ended up being enough cake for about 80 people. We had to take all the extras home with us, as the host is trying to lose weight I think. So now I have to figure out what to do with it all... bring it in to the office?
Oh, and he never mentioned anything about the cost of the cake (see thread on whether to fib about it or not), so neither did we. We didn't have to fib OR make a fuss. We'll just cover the cost and that's that. Phew! That was easy.
Things were pretty low key, just the host briefly toasted us, we cut the cake, then toasted our hosts and my friend and her fiance who recently got engaged.
Most of the guests contributed to a money pool, which I think we'll use to buy our pot set. But we did receive a few lovely gifts - only one from the registry! I was really touched that our friends came up with such thoughtful things. One gift was a luscious handbound black leather photo album from Saks with the old fashioned skin page coverings and the little tabs that you glue in. It has that yummy expensive leather smell and feels wonderful. A total sensory experience! It came in a gorgeous storage box too, and we got all sentimental thinking about our children and grandchildren some day opening that box to look at our wedding photos.
The other great gift was a framed 16th century woodcut on a subject that interests FI. We have a lot of old maps and things, and it fits in wonderfully on our 'gallery wall' and will give us lots of pleasure for years to come.
Anyway, so overall, the party was fun and roaring success! But we didn't have to do much, so no wonder.
Hopefully the orchids we sent to thank the hosts arrived today. For those following that thread, we sent the bouquet, rather than the plant.
