So, last night was the party that FI's boss threw for us so that we could celebrate with our local friends. It was fun! Juuuust right. Very low key and not embarassing. About 35 or 40 people came and we all drank champagne and ate cake and chatted. I wondered if it was a little awkward for our hosts since they didn't know many of the guests in their home, but they really genuinely care about us, so I think they were happy to throw the party.

As the host predicted, we ended up with waaaaaay too much cake. We ordered a smaller version of this cake for 20 people (as the hosts recommended). But then I panicked and baked another one. The cake I baked was good, but really messy! It looked hilarious next to the professional one. A friend of mine described it as "the perfect amercian housewife cake." Haha? But I was glad he enjoyed it, in all its rustic glory. Then some of the guests brought a couple more cakes. So there ended up being enough cake for about 80 people. We had to take all the extras home with us, as the host is trying to lose weight I think. So now I have to figure out what to do with it all... bring it in to the office?

Oh, and he never mentioned anything about the cost of the cake (see thread on whether to fib about it or not), so neither did we. We didn't have to fib OR make a fuss. We'll just cover the cost and that's that. Phew! That was easy.

Things were pretty low key, just the host briefly toasted us, we cut the cake, then toasted our hosts and my friend and her fiance who recently got engaged.

Most of the guests contributed to a money pool, which I think we'll use to buy our pot set. But we did receive a few lovely gifts - only one from the registry! I was really touched that our friends came up with such thoughtful things. One gift was a luscious handbound black leather photo album from Saks with the old fashioned skin page coverings and the little tabs that you glue in. It has that yummy expensive leather smell and feels wonderful. A total sensory experience! It came in a gorgeous storage box too, and we got all sentimental thinking about our children and grandchildren some day opening that box to look at our wedding photos.

The other great gift was a framed 16th century woodcut on a subject that interests FI. We have a lot of old maps and things, and it fits in wonderfully on our 'gallery wall' and will give us lots of pleasure for years to come.

Anyway, so overall, the party was fun and roaring success! But we didn't have to do much, so no wonder.

Hopefully the orchids we sent to thank the hosts arrived today. For those following that thread, we sent the bouquet, rather than the plant.

Sounds like it was an absolute smash; I''m so happy you had a wonderful time!

Now, care to send over some cake?

Isolde, at this point I''d be willing to pay you to take this cake off our hands! Want to swing by?

Like my hips need to have this in the house, 6 weeks before the wedding.

Thank heavens for spanx.

I''d gladly do it for free.

Spanx; It seems everywhere I turn, brides are singing its praises! I really must check into this, when the time comes to purchase a dress. Speaking of which, what is your dress like?

Hi Indy,

I''m so glad to hear the party went off without a hitch!

It sounds like it was everything you hoped for!

Congratulations!

Indy, I''m glad it was such as blast! Those orchids in the pic you posted in your other thread are gorgeous, and I''m sure your hosts will love them. We''re thinking of having a bouquet of orchids on our gift table at our wedding. We''ll see.

I am drooling at the thought of all that cake. I am an American housewife...and I would appreciate your baking masterpiece! Of course, would have eaten far more of the orange cream thingy.

That album is such a smashing idea! And the fact you are already picturing generations beyond holding it, got me teary eyed. Awhhh...( I guess POT set means cookware??

Didn''t we have another thread on this issue, months ago

-your sisters bf I think??)

So tell us, it is real yet???

That cake looks amazing! Really and truly yummy! Sounds like a great night and what thoughtful gifts you got!

Now I''m back to dreaming about the cake...

I''m glad to hear the party was fun! I''d love some cake too!

Thanks everyone. I got really shy and embarassed for a minute right when the hosts were about to toast us but mentally forced myself to get a grip. I don''t mind being the center or attention at work, if I''m addressing a meeting or giving a talk or something, but I''m not so good with this kind of thing.

So, i''ll have to work on that mentally before the wedding!

DKS Yup, the all-clad kind, not the weedy kind. Haha. Did I ever update that step-sis dumped that loser ? PHEW! One less wedding stress, and yet another piece of evidence that you shouldn''t worry about things before they happen.

Well, if you did update on the loser (L) I missed it. It has been a nagging thought in my mind in all these wedding events...just when and how that LOSER was going to be a factor! Whew! Did you eat some cake today? Was it better now that 30 eyes weren''t staring at you? You know how when you bring home leftover from a restaurant or party...it is so much better at home while in your jammies.
6.gif
That is the only reason to eat out! Ha.

Yeah, DKS have you ever noticed how things taken out of context or at the wrong time are so much better? Like napping is so much yummier than going to bed at night (because at the wrong time), matinees are so much better than movies on a friday night, and take-out is sometimes so much tastier than ''eating in''!

What a pretty cake!!

Indy, it sounds like you had a wonderful time. I am happy for you. I hope you get your all-clad pots. I have been drooling over them for the last 8 years.

although I don''t need it, I would take some of that cake off of your hands. Also, if you plan to save the top tier of your cake and eat it on your anniversary, you could experiment with the extra cake you have now. Make sure that your wedding cake taste good when you get around to it.
