Hi everyone. So I''d like to try to work in 1,000 pastel/silver paper cranes into reception decoration, but I am not sure it is possible. I know the venue is kind of formal, but it also opens up to the outside and it''s kind of an outside in kind of venue, so I think we have some wiggle room. Also, I don''t plan on having very elaborate decorations on the table. Maybe some votive candles or a hurricane glass with a candle inside. Or a small vase with a very simple arrangement. There are also Asian themes throughout the venue itself. It''s something I really wanted to do. I''ll probably string them together in groups of 10 or so, or I could lie them around. So my question is: which do you think would look better, to hang them somewhere or place them on tables? If so, which tables? Gift table, registration table, cake table, even guest tables?

Here are the reception venues I am looking at and the one we unanimously decided on: PS Reception Post

Well, if there''s an outdoor area with trees, I love this idea.

One more pic I found of them hanging (by the cake table...?):

Ooh very pretty. I will see if it would be possible to suspend them near the cake table or outside (there are two terraces I believe).

Thank you!

Hmmm. I know that originally, folding 1000 cranes was associated with making a wish, but I can''t help associating it with nuclear war, sickness and death because of the Sadako story.

I might do a straw poll to make sure this isn''t a common association, as you don''t want ''leukemia'' and ''nuclear holocaust'' to be words popping into peoples'' heads at your wedding, or wondering if one of you is ill, right?

Hopefully, it''s just me that has that association! As I think it looks very pretty.

Hmm, well I mean, I associate it with the same thing except for me I associate it with peace now (you know Japan''s whole "we are the nation of peace" thing). And I know for most of friends it would be just Japan since it''s origami. See, the first time I went to Japan we hung 1,000 paper cranes in Hiroshima and it was a really touching moment for me. But, maybe a poll would be a good idea. I will ask around and see what people associate it with. If they think atomic bombs and not like peace, hope..that''d be bad.

Hey Sarah, if IF other people have that association with cranes, what about some other kind of origami figure? Flowers? Some other kind of bird? ??

Just a "just in case" thought.

That''s a good idea, plus we could do less..wouldn''t have to do 1,000. Haha. Thank you!

Flowers would be really pretty I think and we could scatter them along the gift and registration tables but not interfere with eating space at guest tables. Or we could suspend them somewhere.

My friend string 10 cranes on a string with a ring on top and gave one to each guest. It was so pretty and you wouldn''t believe how many people have kept theirs going on 20 years!! They were just too pretty to throw away. I don''t remember how she had them displayed before they were passed out but they were hanging somewhere. Great idea!

I've seen paper cranes at a lot of weddings. I don't associate them with anything bad, and I've read the Sadako story. I think its a great idea.

Here's one idea of how to use them: Cranes

Here's a better pic: Crane

i like the idea of keeping them mostly together. i think it would make more of an impact to have 1000 all together, as opposed to 10 here, 10 there, etc. or maybe, keep them 90% of them together somewhere you''d like to highlight, but then have little surprise peek-a-boo cranes peeking out of a few of your centerpieces, or in the bathroom in the lotion basket, or other little places like that.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! I agree I think it would probably make more of an impact with them all in one place. However, I hadn''t thought of using them as favors. That''s cool, too. Wow and hanging them all up like in the photos goldenstar would be awesome. By the way MMM, love your avatar!

thank you! : )

Hi everyone! Let me update, I am thinking about doing a different kind of origami. I spoke with my Japanese friend about it, and she said she couldn''t remember what cranes mean (which I thought was kind of funny), but when I told her she said she thinks she might do something else other than peace. Not having to make a 1,000 would be nice! I am thinking about making love birds! I picked up a book of origami that was 50% off tonight, so I will try some styles out and post them. Then I could just do a few for certain tables or something. Any thoughts?
