I want to put a 2 carat Peridot as the center stone in my engagement ring. I was told it probably wouldn''t be a good idea because it is too delicate. I really want to go with a green stone, no emeralds though!

Anyone have any ideas? I really don''t have a clue on how delicate the stone really is. I have attached a picture of the semi mount I am looking at.

Thanks for any help....I am new to this!

Yeah, Peridot is a bit too soft for everyday wear.

Maybe a tsavorite? They are generally a darker richer green, but they are stunning. I'll keep thinking for you! Green sapphires can also be found too (which is the hardest gem next to diamond, so a great choice). Another good choice.

Topaz is also a bit harder I think...and you might be able to find some spinel in green.

I agree that peridot is much too soft as an engagement ring. Other options as mentioned would be a green sapphire, green tourmaline and tsavorite. All 3 come in many different ranges of green and are hardy enough for a ring with proper care. You should be able to find a yellow green that mimics the look of a peridot.

Thanks for the help, I will check into these!

You could also look at chrysoberyl which can be a bit more yellowy in colour - it's an 8.5 and one of the stones on my near future wish list:

nice beryl, Pan! and who might the vendor be?

i like the sapphire idea for an e-ring. but i think the beryl may be closer in color to peridot.

The ring would be gorgeous with a green stone. I would go for a green sapphire. Can''t wait to see what you get.

MZ, it looks to be a AJS stone.

Pandora, that''s one rich looking beryl. The colour is also a good match for a peridot.

Nice isn''t it.

It''s on the 3rd page of Chrysoberyls on AJSgems.

3.95ct and $475

Hmm now that is an idea and I love the color. I am not a huge Green sapphire. but love that beryl! I also at one time was going to set my diamond in a 3 stone with 2 peridots on the side. I love the color of them and it is the birthstone of my 2 girls. The jeweler said that he would do it but that they proobably won''t wear well and will need to be replaced in the future. But that said they are a cheaper stone so it wouldn''t be an expensive replacement but who wants to have a stone replaced every couple of years and give up there ring! The price we pay for finger beauty
