I am a huge sucker for silky spinels, and happen to love the ones that are pink with orange flash. They’re as close to an affordable padparadscha as I can get

I found one I am really delighted with and want to set, after I set my blue spinel from Gene at Precision Gems. The blue is going in a simple white gold Tiffany style solitaire, so for the pink spinel I wanted to get a little crazy and have fun.

I created a mock up of a potential ring. This is a setting I found on an image search, it wouldn’t be this exactly, but I like the idea of black gold or maybe even a halo of black diamonds to amp up the color.

The other plan is just a simple platinum halo or white gold Edwardian east/west setting. I don’t want to bezel this stone because I fear it might mute the beautiful orange and yellow flashes of color.

Thoughts? Is the black gold idea too “young” or Barbie doll looking?

For perspective I think black gold is goth and gorgeous... but I don’t want it to look like costume jewelry. The east/west setting might look amazing after a black rhodium dip.

I had a ring with pink tourmaline in blackened gold and I didn't like it.

It was kind of stark in person and did feel costume jewelry like. It just didn't feel like real jewelry.

That stone is amazing! I prefer the first setting, but I'm honestly not sure how the black will look compared to sticking with traditional white or yellow gold.

I am considering yellow gold too!

That’s why I thought maybe nice quality black diamonds as a compromise, but even those are tricky if not executed perfectly. Black diamonds had a moment in the early/mid 2000s/2010s where they were the staple for every “Unconventional bride” and I also want to avoid that vibe

I would think that would look nice. I just do not care for the blackened gold and have had it in person before.

I think white gold will make the color *pop* more than yellow gold. Black even more, but again I've never owned black gold so it's hard for me to say whether I like it or not.

I keep going back to the idea of a yellow or white gold halo, but with chunky old cuts. Definitely leaning the white gold or platinum route, as I don’t own anything in yellow gold.

Keep in mind the black rhodium on any exposed surface that rubs anything will wear off. What about white/yellow gold with ‘antiquing’ in recessed/engraved areas? Or even enamel in a recessed area?
I agree black diamond melee needs to be done just right to not look too costume-y.
Then there’s black onyx ( ) that also would need to be done the right way.

I love your stone!
