I have found two lovely pink pears - way beyond on my price range, but I might just go for it (doing my thing to help the economy, mind you!) BUT i have no idea if the "rules" for a good cut apply to colored stones as well - can anyone advise me?

Here are the stats:
5.12x3.65x2.81
depth 77%
table 56%
very t to extremely thick girdle
med blue flour
crown angles are greater than 40 deg

5.23x3.54x2.35
depth 66.4%
table 63%
slightly to extremely thick girdle
no flour

also does anyone know how the flour will affect a colored stone? any insight would be most appreciated!

Hi brellymom, welcome! Colored stones is a whole different ball game than diamonds, and optimal angles and depth will vary, depending on the gemstone's RI. Lots of other factors come into play as well, like color, saturation, tone, etc. You really need to see gemstones in person, or have a good set of photos; it's nearly impossible to judge cutting quality based on a set of figures. You also didn't mention what kind of gemstone you're looking at - can you give us any more info, and possibly some photos? I love pink, and I love pears, so I'm intrigued.

I'm assuming that the pink pears are diamonds? If yes, then fluor can affect coloured diamonds by either making them appear whiter in sunshine or not! In all honesty, it's impossible to predict what the fluor will do to each stone (as each could react differently). I would ask the Vendor for his/her opinion. By way of an example, I have a yellow diamond with strong blue floor that makes it almost appear white at times. The colour of the fluor can also have effect i.e. blue (most common), yellow, green etc.

In terms of cut, there is less emphasis on cut of a coloured diamond and much more on colour. However, as with any gemstone, a very poor cut will affect performance. What you don't see very often (if at all) are precision cut coloured diamonds so please don't try to apply the same conditions as you would to a white diamond. So long as it's a nice looking diamond then I wouldn't worry about cut.

Hope that helps.
