Lia and I will most likely be getting married in Michigan (where she is from - Detroit suburb) but neither of us live anywhere near there now.

We are thinking our hiring a planner/consultant - anyone have any experiences with anyone in that area? Anyone I definately should or definately should not call?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

I''m in MI. I didn''t work with a planner so I can''t give you any suggestions. However, usually when you go to look at reception halls, they have plenty of information for you in the form of business cards. I went to Cobblestone Farms in Ann Arbor and they had plenty and I recall one being for an event planner..unfortunately I can not remember the name.

Did you just start planning?

I found a couple sites that might be helpful.

www.michigan.worldweb.com

www.gatherguide.com

You can search by city for planners

just got engaged last weekend so we are in the very begining of planning

Congratulations.

I hope those 2 websites will be helpful.

I am getting married in Saginaw about 2.5 hours away from Detroit. I did look at plenty of places within 20 minutes of Detroit. What suburb is her family from?

I''m from Ann Arbor, which may or may not be close to your wedding (depends on the suburb).

When we were thinking of hiring a planner, I spoke to Kate from Purple Clover Events. She seemed really nice on the phone, although I never met with her in person. I''ve heard that she''s really good.
We didn''t end up hiring a planner, but I did hire Lynn from Town and Country Errands to help out the day of the wedding. Wedding hasn''t happened yet, but she seems great so far!

You might try posting on the local Detroit board on the Knot. They can probably suggest someone for you.

Her family lives in Farmington Hills (she grew up in Grosse Point) and we met at school in Ann Arbor.

We are pretty open to getting married anywhere in that general area.

Here''s a couple suggestions although I don''t know if they will fit your wedding.

Cobblestone Farms in Ann Arbor is very nice, the reception hall is an old barn converted (very nicely), if you like a country setting (there''s a chicken coup outside of the bar, with chickens and a goat!). However, the only negative is that you have to bring in all your supplies/vendors (i.e., caterer, place settings, liquor) Cobblestone only supplies table and chairs. It''s actually where I wanted to have my wedding until we found a place by his parents. They fit up to 250 people.

Longacre House in Farmington is beautiful as well. It''s an old farmhouse that was made into a reception hall, the landscape is beautiful and they have an area outside that would be great to have the ceremony. It''s very intimate, my friend had her reception there. Because they only have room to have one reception a night they are a little bit more pricey and you bring in your own liquor/beer/wine. Also, in the upstairs area they have bridal and groom suites to ready in. They fit up to 120 people.

That will definately get us started, I will look into both of these - thanks again.

You may also want to check out craigslist.org
I don''t need a full-on coordinator, just a "day of" person to ease my type-A personality. I checked out a couple of "professional coordinators", but didn''t want to spend a fortune.

I found a couple of leads on CL. You definitely have to do your homework, as I found that they range from gals that have experience, and come with refs, contacts, etc... to people who are willing to do for almost nothing, to get the experience. But I don''t want to be anyone''s guinea pig!
