While traveling my husband found a ring he thinks I will love. He took a not so great picture of it thru the case glass. I have the GIA, it is an excellent cut, polish, and symmetry. I would like an opinion on it before I make the 2+ hour drive to see it. There was a post several days ago, someone was wanting help with a different round. Under the post someone made an observation/comment on the measurements saying “Generally 43.5 PD is the fatal step off. It will affect light return negatively. I would hard pass.” I’m assuming PD is pavilion depth, if so, that is the same PD of the stone I’m considering. Should I not waste my time and go ahead and cross this one off?

These are the proportions I recommend. 35.5 crown is not what I like to see combined with a 41 degree pavilion angle.

You can run the angles/measurements through the Holloway Cut Advisor (HCA) tool, under the Tools tab at the top of the page.

This will give a score that indicates the angles work well together (and will therefore have good light performance and minimal light leakage) or a score that indicates the angles do not work well together (and will therefore suffer light leakage and poor performance).

I believe you have a few free uses before you are required to pay to use the HCA tool, but if you use the Diamond Search bar near the top of the forum, you can enter your preferred requirements and budget and the listings will give you a range of options. Use the Filters to only select stones with an overall HCA score of 'Excellent' and you will filter out stones that perform less well quickly and easily, saving you the need to use the HCA tool many times.
