Hi everyone. I''''ve been "lurking" on this site ever since my boyfriend of six years and I decided to start talking about marriage. Even though its "his" job to do the diamond searching, I''''ve become obsessed with looking at rings and reading up on diamonds. This site is so unbelievably awesome and the pictures of everyone''''s rings are beautiful.

We did a "dry run" as my guy likes to call it at Jared''''s to do some diamond prices. I fell in love with this diamond:

.71
F
VS2

Sparkly and looked beautiful in any setting. I always thought I would like a bigger diamond but I loved this diamond so much.

So here''''s my question. Jared quoted the diamond at 3,500. This seems like too much for less than 1 carat and I''''ve done some internet pricing and have seen for less. Does this seem reasonable?

Also, if you guys wouldn''''t mind, the setting will be in 14K white gold but they mentioned having a platinum mounting for durability. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it necessary? Does 285 sound reasonable for this?

Thanks so much for help.

Do you have the details from the lab certificate on that stone? You could get an ideal cut, top quality, .70-.71 F VS1 for about $3600.

You'll almost always get a better quality stone at a better price with a reputable online vendor.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3469/ ($3634)

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912912.htm ($3647 w/ wire pricescope discounts)

However, because ideal cut stones appear so bright and white, I would consider this one, too:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-978317.htm .735 G VS2 $3455 w/discounts

or if you can go up to $4000

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-978315.htm .786 G VS2 $4044 w/discounts

I'd go with 18k white gold as it is more durable than 14k wg, or else I'd go with platinum....or 18k white gold band with platinum head.

Thank you so much!

You are very welcome!

Hi Fiery!

Unless you want to buy purely by your eyes ( which is fine!) then we will need more info to be able to assist you with this diamond. Could you post the -

Lab grading report for this diamond.
depth %
table %
crown angle, or percent if available
pavilion angle - ditto above.
girdle thickness
polish and symmetry grades

Would you be open to the idea of buying online?

I will add to the great advice you have been given by the ladies - please don''t get sucked in to the "you need platinum for a durable ring" pitch - its just that, a sales pitch. (platinum is at least twice the price of 18k gold at the moment..hmmm)

..
The choice of metal is entirely personal preference - what looks good on you. Most will advise not go below 18k gold for an ering and I agree, and if you love platinum than go for it, but only if its what you want.

Hi Lorelei,

I will definitely get that info for you once I visit the store again. The sales person only wrote down the information above but thank you for the additional specs...next time we go in there we''ll sound like pros ;)

Thank you Jane for the comment on the setting. I wasn''t sure. I think we will go with 18k as I''m getting the same response from a lot of other people as well.

Thank you all!

Please try looking online w/ one of the PS vendors, you will get a better and mostly likely bigger diamond for the same price or less. good luck.
