Couple of questions to get you started.
What is your budget?
Is this a suprise or have you looked at rings together?
You need to find out what type of diamond (shape) and ring setting she would like.
Take 1-2 weeks to soak up the knowledge here on PS. Don't rush the purchase
Read the tutorial and search for threads on subjects where you have questions.
Look through the various forums, including the Show Me the Ring forum.

First of all, congratulations.
Secondly, I don't really have any "technical" opinion to give, but as a girl, I recommend you very sneakily find out what she likes. Round, princess, emerald diamond? Gold or white gold or platinum? Very simple or intricate? She'll look at the ring every day for the rest of her life so its important you either discuss it with her and let her have a say (some girls want to have a say) or if you want to surprise her, do some subtle background research. I'd strongly advise you ask her best friend, sister, mother, somebody who would know. I know what style most of my friends and my sister would like, so chances are you can get the scoop from a sneaky person close to her. (But maybe make sure its someone who can keep a secret ...)
Also, definitely just lurk around here and read or listen to the tutorials online (here on Pricescope or other sites) to learn about diamonds. Don't rush into buying because you'll learn a lot quickly and if you buy too early you might wish you'd waited a bit.
