On a recent fishing trip to regional Victoria I spotted this beautiful platypus swimming around. I also saw something else while I was driving, but I'll avoid describing what happened for fear of making myself look like I'm crazy

What did you see?? A skinwalker??

Well, tbh I don't know what I saw. I've seen a lot of wildlife at 4am in my high beams and this didn't look like anything I've ever seen before, was as tall as I am and reflective eyes like a cat or fox. My wife thinks it was an emu but the silhouette was not the same shape as what an emu should be - and is one wild animal I've never seen this far south. I can usually tell what an animal is in the dark by the silhouette as I've seen that many of them, but this has me stumped.

I have some mates who think I saw a Yowie, both of them claim to have seen them as well. I'm not saying I believe I saw a yowie or that they even exist - but when I described what I saw to those 2 mates, they're pretty certain I saw one.

Maybe I'm crazy?

Oooohh I love stories like that! There are some very strange things in the woods.
Honestly I’ve seen enough strange things in my life I won’t just assume you’re crazy.

Finally getting to see some hummingbird action! Not the best image (sorry, just a phone image) Pretty sure this is a female ruby throat. You can't see all the colors in this image (its a very grey day today) but the feathers are greenish. I saw the a male Sunday afternoon, throat was very ruby red so unmistakable. thankful that this stuff is getting used at least.

I think it might be a male. This is what a female Ruby-throated looks like.

Your guy has the darker throat. It may just be the light.

But whatever, aren't they fun to watch? I have them regularly in the summer and am always happy when I can catch a good photo.

ooo interesting! The one I saw on Sunday was definitely a male, bigger than this guy. (maybe this one is juvenile male?) No red to be seen on this one even when it turned toward me. They don't appear to be scared of me being out there which is cool.

Anyway I've had the feeder up for about a year now. Last spring I saw 2 that had green throats but haven't seen them since. In summer I got nothing, just a lot of wasted juice. I recall seeing only 1 in September but of course no camera but non since then. Could be that I just kept missing them.

Now they're seemingly bit more prolific but I think its because someone talked...lol I saw another this morning.. can't confirm its the same one as that wind /rain is something I don't willingly want to go out in.

Take a look at this article. https://birdwatchingnc.com/how-to-t...eniles-and-female-ruby-throated-hummingbirds/

I still think yours is a male, but I'm no expert. Keep an eye out. They tend to come back to the feeders once they find them. I get them all day long off and on during season here. But only one at a time. They chase each other off.

I have a question, was wondering if anyone here knows what it means, or if it's happened to you.

For a while now, since summer and now even, we have little "snacks" left around our house outside, on the window sills. There are 4 or 5 things out there right now, alone. A tiny donut, pieces of bread etc, recently a sprinkle cookie lol.

Has this happened to any of you? I have read in the past that sometimes the animals you feed, come back and leave treats as a thank you (I know this sounds insane :D) . I've also read that they stash things and forget to come back or forget where they hid the food!! Was just wondering what you all thought, as this has been going on for a long time!! The donut has been sitting in the snow on the backyard sill for 2 months now. The cookie sat really long too, but then was gone.

I don't think that's ever happened to me, and I feed birds all the time. Have you googled it? It could be little gifts, or forgotten treats as you noted. It sounds cute though.

I did now yes!! It looks like it could be squirrels that are leaving their food and maybe forgetting to come back. It is cute, I read a few stories that had people scratching their heads at the bread/food they'd find, with others chiming in about the squirrels haha..

We got a TON of snow last night.. but here are a few icicle pics I took a couple days back.20250205_173613.jpg20250206_125252.jpg
