Yesterday afternoon on the way home from our day of cycling we saw this sweet scene. I took it without stopping so as to not disturb momma and babies

Screen Shot 2023-08-13 at 6.24.26 AM.png

On the night of July 26-27, the stork chicks were ringed. Apparently for some reason it was done a bit later than optimal, and 2 of the stork chicks escaped the nest, flying down to the forest floor to avoid Urmas (the man who maintains the Estonian webcams and rings the chicks.)
Volunteers located the stork chicks and returned them to the nest in the bag that is used to weigh them. Stork chick #2 (7192), who was larger than the others, received a transmitter also. The chicks are also sexed-- I believe a small feather is removed to test for sex.

This is the video of the entire event-- 49 minutes long. At minute 15 the one chick that didn't fly off the nest is ringed; around minute 18 it is weighed. The blanket is placed over the chicks to quiet them and keep them safe, removed only when Urmas leaves.

I think the lesser goldfinch male and female were doing rumpy pumpy, haha. Couldn't get a good shot of the girl, so just the boy then.

I as a bit startled to see only one chick sleeping on the nest just now, but I can clearly hear the other one making noises on the camera stand.
It's safe to assume it's the older one who has flapped up to the stand, and I'm thinking soon he'll begin flying off the nest.
There's a dirty smudge on the lens, unfortunately.

The Clinton nest is empty at the moment! Both osprey chicks have begun flying!
They will return to the nest; they don't know how to fish yet. The parent will continue to bring fish for them to eat until they are ready to migrate.
Is Estonia the mother migrates first and it's the dad who stays to feed the chicks.

Both chicks have begun to fly!.png

A parent is next to the nest, was previously on the nest looking around while one kid was making noises on the camera stand.
The parent was calling but they didn't bring any fish.

I saw one chick attempt a landing but it overshot the nest, and flew off to the left with the other chick that had been on the camera stand.
Parent is back alone.

Younger chick is back on the nest and calling for food. He has an orange leg tag now.
Parent arrived a few minutes ago with a live fish, and ate some of it even as chick screamed for his turn at it!
Finally the parent fed the chick (who could easily feed himself at this point.)
Earlier when only the parent was there, 2 crows landed on the nest and ate bits of leftover fish. Now one is visiting the nest again.
Someone is on the camera stand.
It was a crow-- he stole a bit of fish from the left side of the nest. I also saw the crows take nesting material, but why, so late in the year??

That Paraiba blue/chestnut brown combo + penguin like puffing out chubby chest, Ruddy male is just delightful to watch.

2 parents on the nest, with a fresh fish, and no chicks! They are looking around as if to ask, " Did they say they were coming home to eat?" (A question my husband and I have sometimes asked each other about our daughter .)

A crow has been scavenging for leftover bits of fish. The ospreys tolerate him as long as he keeps his distance.
Just now I saw 3 crows. One left with a fish tail. The parent with the fish is getting antsy.

I'm watching, too. Where are the chicks? Mom looks annoyed. And what's going on with Dad's leg?

His leg is ok I think, maybe he was resting it.

A bit of a domestic dispute! Dad (on the right) tried to take the fish away from Mom, several times. She defended it and calls loudly for the kids to come.
Dad keeps looking over at the fish. I think he may try to take it again.

Dad edges closer, Mom lunges at him and he backs off.
It is her catch, after all.

Another failed attempt by Dad to get the fish away from Mom.
I wonder how long she'll wait?

The male is not calling for the kids. I wonder why he doesn't just go catch himself a fish?

Dad chased a crow off the nest, then left and returned with a stick (nesting material) which he is now moving to the edge of the nest. Seems like a strange time to bring sticks, now that the kids are fledging.
Dad moved a clump of grass. Housekeeping.

Dad left again, and returned again. Doesn't seem to know what to do with himself.

I wonder if his foot is injured or strained? He does seem to pull it up to rest a lot.
It would explain repeated attempts to get that fish, instead of flying off to get his own.
Yet another failed attempt:

Great drama. Thanks.

We had a power outage so I didn't see what happened on the osprey nest after that. I have no idea if the kids ever got that fish!
No one is on the nest now.

The Clinto osprey webcam is now also offline. I think that's it for the season!

I wonder where these ospreys migrate to? The Estonian ones migrate to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter.

I really enjoyed watching them.
The other osprey cam with three chicks went down a while ago.
I bet that nest is crowded right now! Too bad we can't see it.

He would be terrible at hide and seek :lol-2:
