A question with a backstory: we bought my engagement ring in February after spending an hour or two shifting from foot to foot in a sweltering store, and, naturally, my fingers decided to betray me ... the size 6 that we bought is perfect under those condtions, but generally speaking, my left-hand ring-finger is a size 5.5. Now, I'm Russian by background, so I ordered my wedding ring in a 5.75, perfect for my right hand. On occasion, I can wear my e-ring on the right hand alongside it ("occasion" meaning "very warm day"), but, in general, I'm wearing the e-ring on my let hand with a sizer, and the wedding ring on my right hand on its own. I'm thinking about having the e-ring sized down so that I can wear the two of them together on my right hand permanently, with the option of switching the set over to my left hand should they shift with pregnancy ....

But I realized, I have no idea how women's hands change during and after the fact! I'm the only child of only children, so no aunts or cousins to ask, and my mom's not really much of a jewelry person, so she's not sure how much her hands changed after having me. I realize it'll be pretty general with such a broad base, but ... help?

ETA: Not pregnant yet, and hopefully not for a year or two - just planning ahead!

Are you expecting now?? I am asking bc i would not wait to size your ring till after you have kids. Your dominant hand i usually half size bigger. Please, get that rock sized you may lose it. And yes, you probably will need sizing after you have a baby if you retain weight. It should not be a problem for most rings.

Heh, no, and hopefully not for a couple of years ... I''m just trying to think ahead. I''m in no danger of losing the e-ring (I generally wear it with a sizing band that cradles it on both sides - happy to post pics if the explanation fails) - I''m just wondering if I should hold off on sizing it and just keep wearing it with the sizer, or assume that my ring size will stay within a half-size if and when I sprout ... I''d like to avoid sizing it up, and sizing it down again if I can. Thanks for the advice!

everyone is different. there are gals here who did end up going up a half size or even more after they were pregnant. shoe sizes can increase too

. My fingers stayed the same size after 2 pregnancy''s though and i''m pregnant with #3 so we''ll see what happens this time. I''d get the ring sized to where they are comfortable for you now and worry about the ring size it may need to be after you have a baby a few years down the road.

I went up one size after having children.

My fingers are maybe slightly bigger since having a baby but nothing significant enough to have to resize my ring.

Mine stayed the same with all 3.

Yep, get your ring sized to fit you now because you cannot predict how your fingers will look after having a baby. . .FWIW, my ring size went DOWN after having my kids because I lost a bit of weight. My knuckle does seems to be a tad larger, but I was able to get my ring sized down 1/4 size and still have it fit properly.

My ring size increased BEFORE I got pregnant. It increased 2 whole sizes in 5 years. I didn''t have any huge weight fluctuations or anything. My size hasn''t changed since I got pregnant and had my son. I wore my rings to the hospital when I went in to have him, and wore them home again.

I''m so relieved reading that very few of you had any noticeable change. I had been wondering about that lately!

Really? Because my bf bought a ring for my right hand years ago, and I thought I was a size 6.5, when the ring arrived, it was way too loose. I've been wearing it on my left hand ever since because my left ring finger is slightly bigger (still loose, but no threat of it falling off with day to day activities, unlike on my right ring finger). Am a freak!?!?

and btw, I'm glad this thread was started because I was wondering the same thing.

Everyone is different regarding post-pregnancy ring sizes. It may or may not change. MoonWater, my left (non-dominant hand) is slightly larger than my right too. I played the violin for a few years and I''ve read that playing a string instrument could make your left finger a little larger. Maybe that was the cause...

Mine went from a 4.75 to a 5.5.

Thank you all for the tips! I suppose I''ve been a little lazy about resizing just because the e-ring looks okay with the sizer (the sizer''s basically a split band that cradles the e-ring on both sides - think clamshell), if in a slightly different way, giving the illusion of a 4 mm. band instead of the actual 2 mm. band, but now that I have the wedding ring, I''d like to be able to wear them together! I just couldn''t figure out if it would just mean another inevitable bout of resizing in the near future, but with this being the case, I might as well live in the now ....

If you''re planning to take off your baby weight after the fact, just get your regular ring size - I only stopped wearing my rings for the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy, and I could wear them again within a week after haivng the baby. I gained 35 lbs. during the pregnancy but have lost it all, and the rings fit me like they did when I got them.

My mom had 3 kids - she was a size 10 when she got married and is a size 14 now, and her rings still fit just fine. The reason that many women''s feet get larger during pregnancy is because of the pressure on the bones from the weight gain, but since your hands don''t bear any extra weight during the pregnancy, that shouldn''t happen to your fingers. I have some friends who had to have their rings resized after a pregnancy, but that''s because they never lost the pregnancy weight, so their fingers stayed larger after they had their babies.
