Key aspects of Senate Bill that was passed:
Those in the country unlawfully for five (5) years or more would be:
Permitted to remain & continue working (after passing a criminal background check)
Apply for citizenship - but go to the back of the waiting list.
Required to pay at least $3,250 in fines and fees.
Settle any back taxes
Learn English.
Those in the country unlawfully for two (2) to five (5) years would be:
Required to exit the US and return through a point of entry to re-enter the US legally.
Then permitted to remain & continue working (after passing a criminal background check)
Apply for citizenship - but go to the back of the waiting list.
Required to pay at least $3,250 in fines and fees.
Settle any back taxes

Those in the country unlawfully for less than two (2) years would be:
Required to leave with no guarantee of return.
1.5 Million positions would be created as "Temporary Workers" for seasonal work.
200,000 positions would be created as "Guest Workers"
Temporary and Guest Workers could apply and petition for residency (get a "Green Card")
and start the immigration process under certain restrictions or for certain other
considerations than the norma immigration process. This to reward good workers or
to address certain employer abuse situations.
14,000 border patrol by 2011 with a fully constructed triple fence or barriers on the Mexican border with survelience equipment.

OK; I'm not going to claim its perfect; but it is a lot more reasonable in certain ways than some of the other proposals I have heard of. I would not loose any sleep over the issue if this is what is adopted by the house and signed into law.
