Preggo stuff, Baby Stuff, Toddler Stuff...post your best finds here!!

re: video monitors: we got the mobi cam video monitor from target, it was $100. it had a lot of good reviews. haven't set it up yet. one thing i really like about it is that you have the option to create a url so that remote people can log on and view it, like a nanny cam kinda thing. so we can give the link to greg's fam and they can log on and see the baby in the crib and stuff. fun! just gotta remember to turn it off when bf'ing...

re: burp cloths... i got the prefold ones with the triple lined middle (by accident). but then my mom was saying something about some rubber or latex burp cloth recommendation? i thought maybe she meant the waterproof multipurpose pads.

speaking of waterproof multipurpose pads, walmart has an 8 pack of 18x27 for $15 that i am trying.

oh and i'll check out those thermal blankets at BRU.

I LOVED the zipper sleeps. She wore them until she was 18 months or so. But TGal makes a good point to to go overboard with buying ANYTHING until you try it yourself.

Mara, that actually creeps me out. Pillows for you, spy cams for me. Haha.

Monitors If I could do it again I would get a video on in a SECOND. We will be getting one for our next kid. When baby is young you rush in at every peep, but when he is older you want to pick and choose when you go in and you simply cannot do that with a sound only monitor. We are constantly saying to one another, "Is he up? did he chuck all his binky''s out?" Sighhh... things you learn. Blen OUrs is staticky. But its a frickin monitor for like 40 bucks. What do people expect? I can''t hear him breath but I don''t want to either.

Kimonos Are nomonos in my book. Too hard to get on with all those complex snaps.

Tgal I agree about zippers! So silly the way they zip.

I wish I had done it ages ago when Burk and Tacori got theirs. I just thought...I already have this perfectly fine audio monitor...why waste money?

Except that after their first year, you REALLY want to know what they are doing in there! Since you are having a second child, I see no reason why you shouldn''t buy one now if you can find a good price. I just bought one on Amazon and we have no plans for a second. But I could see it coming in super handy for at least the next two years as we move the kid into a toddler bed. If only for entertainment.

Of course, I can be speaking too soon...I haven''t gotten the product yet but will report back once I do. It might send me over the edge watching her do things that I have lived in perfect ignorance about up until then.

As for audio monitors, I have loved our Sony one. It has a mode where it only pics up new noises, so it was very quiet and non static-y since it stays off most of the time. Any continuous noises, it ignores. 50 bucks and was a great monitor for us, but for 132 right now on Amazon, it''s worth it to get to see the kid. Would have saved me a lot of checking when she was an infant.

I may be getting talked into the video monitor...
But I am also a teensy bit creeped out by the baby spy cam.

Sleepers - I also hate the zippers for that reason! However, the woman who taught our newborn care class had winter babies and dressed them in a onesie and then a sleeper, and so then at least the onesie was keeping their belly warm.

Nomomos - LOL. George still has one of those shirts and half the time I try to put it on him, the snaps end up not lining up right. It''s now at the bottom of the drawer.

lol tacori, you set it up with a password and login. i thought it was fun for greg''s fam who is in another state to see the baby.

Quick question ladies... which is the baby thermometer you all used? I remember that it is an ear one, but I can''t find the page... sorry to interrupt the monitor question.

I''m reading that the Braun is the best, but I don''t know if I really need a $50 thermometer?

OK, re the summer infant...

am reading a bit more and apparently if you live in an apartment or a populated area, you can get other people's kids on your monitor and your kid on theirs. That's kind of creepy.

I just told TGuy and he thinks we really don't need it. So I'm debating on cancelling it...hmmm....

ETA, and I guess it's on all night long, so if there's static it will keep you awake. We bought another audio monitor while we were Oz and the static drove me bonkers, so I returned it. I have been very happy with the Sony one for that reason and don't think I could use the video one solely if it had the same issue.

Well, Amazon is already processing my order. So since I have to receive it, I''ll check it out and post a review and return if it sucks.

thanks for the link for the video monitor. i just changed out the audio one we had listed in favor of the video one.

we bought this rectal one [since what i read was that rectal was best at the beginning] and registered for this one for later use. however, for christmas a family member bought us this one which they said was the best thing since sliced bread. i hadn''t heard about it, but found it useful for ourselves so far.

I actually don''t use any monitor now! We can hear him if he really needs us. I think if we ever have any spare money again

(buying our house in this ridiculous location tapped us out) then we will go for it.

Re: Thermometer, thanks ladies!

Jcrow- those are the two I was looking at. Did you happen to read how long you are supposed to use the Rectal before switching ear or armpit?

Video monitor - Get one. We don''t have a video monitor, but have a nanny cam set up in M''s room that''s hooked up to our network. So if we want to, we can see on when we are not home. The camera was how we saw her climbing out of her crib last weekend.

Thermometer - We have the Braun one. It''s ok. Sometimes the reading is off when it''s not in the ear right. We also have a Vicks digital thermometer that we use rectally. We use that more often since it''s more accurate.

my kid thanks you in advance for all of your recommendations and reviews

They gave us a digital rectal one at the hospital and we still use it. I think rectal is more accurate. Again, make sure you take EVERYTHING from the hospital!

meresal, we used the one they gave us at the hospital up the rear. Our Pedi would ask for a rectal temp since it is the most accurate. We switched to an ear one (can''t remember the brand. The fastest one they had) once she wiggled too much. Haha. Honestly I was so nervous about it at first but it is really no big deal. Luckily she is not sick often so I don''t really take her temp much.

Mara, still creeps me out. Websites can be hacked into and stuff and like you mentioned what if you forgot to turn it off and a family member saw or heard something you didn''t want them too. Just my opinion.

TGal, NOOO! You will LOVE it. We use out angel care monitor as an audio one. NO static. Really great and I only turn on the video one when I want to see what she is up to.

I just checked on Amazon and saw it was a good price so I bought it. No tax and I have two day shipping. I''ve been wanting one and the price was right for me.

http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Handheld-Monitor-Screen/dp/B0007OD8SU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1262838014&sr=1-1
OK, here is my review on this product.

It''s a good, soild product. The picture is much clearer than I thought it would be, and the night vision is excellent. Audio wise, it picks up everything in the room, including the tick tock of the clock...

Which could be a bad thing depending on how you are going to use this monitor. If I had this thing by my bedside, I''d go nuts. I can hear everything, and it has a low static sound. The lights on the monitor, when there is noise, is pretty bright, so if you are sensitive to light when you are in a dark room, that would be annoying as well. I still much prefer the voice activation mode on my Sony monitor to use when we are sleeping.

Also, I''m not sure what the battery life is like. I left it charging for half a day and then tried to use the video with the batteries. It worked for about 15 minutes before the video would not work unless the power adapter was in. The video mode only also works consistently when the power is in, so if you are using the battery life, the video will shut off after a few minutes.

Finally, I think it also depends on what type of person you are if this will come in handy. If you are going to check it every 5 minutes and will rush in when the kid is doing something funny, it may cause more annoyance than peace of mind. I say this because yesterday when I tried it for the first time, Amelia chose that day to not take her nap. So it was shenanigans for 2.5 hours! I watched her do all sorts of nutty things that I was in perfect ignorant bliss before. She gnaws (and I mean GNAWS on the zipper on her halo sleep sack). She grabs what she can from her bookshelf (which I''ve since moved farther away) and plays with all kinds of things...and I never knew about it because she puts it RIGHT BACK! She eats hair! If she actually can''t find a strand in the bed, she''ll comb her fingers through her bangs until she gets one, and then she''ll play with it for ages, pulling it through her lips over and over again until she accidently eats it. Then I have to watch her all uncomfortable while she tries to fish the hair out of her mouth. I never knew all this and had no problems just putting her down and not worrying about what she was doing. Now I''m sitting here thinking, "ugh, don''t eat that hair! Your teeth are going to chip if you keep at that zipper like that!"

So I bought this thing and found out my kid is a weirdo. Excellent!

TGal, I have been impressed with my battery life but I don''t leave it running as I just use it as my visual monitor not my audio. How funny you not only caught A doing all those things but that you watched! Haha. I haven''t caught T do anything too strange only jumping on her bed, talking to her bear, singing, kicking her legs, normal stuff. Your kid sounds much more creative!

Video Monitor- We have one of the Summer ones and I love it. O is upstairs and we are downstairs so it''s great for me to check on him. I don''t keep it on all the time- like TGal said, it tends to have static noise and if there is ANY noise in the room, all of the lights light up which is distracting if you are trying to sleep. I keep it off and when I wake up in the middle of the night, I switch it on to check on him. Or if I hear him I look to see if he''s just fussing or if he''s actually up and I need to get up.

lol TG... you''re really surprised at how creative A is??? really? hehee.

i am glad you bumped this because i have been meaning to post and preggo brain keeps letting it slip away but...

any great recommendations for comfy nursing TANKS? i hate hate hate bra''s (and in fact have hardly worn one this pregnancy even though my suckers are definitely way past DD status) so def won''t be wearing bras and want to go the tank route. one or two moms have given me some recommends, i think there is a brand at Target that were recommended. but anyone have some that are super comfy (mostly the shelf bra part if there is one, i hate when it digs into your ribcage) and work really well? i want to get a few this week so recommends helpful. TIA.

Mara, I lived in Target nursing tanks when I was nursing. If you put things on the wall does it automatically convey with the house in CA? We have two of those bookcases. The one in the nursery is hung low (with extra screws). The one in her playroom is hung high. Worked out perfectly b/c there was a vent we don''t want to cover so this was a good solution for us.

mara i lived in nursing bras for the entire time i BFed. i loved the target ones, but i believe the design changed recently, but i could be wrong. still super comfy and not a pain to undo. and gap maternity ones were great too.

Mara- I still live in the Target nursing tanks- think the brand is Gillian O''Malley or something like that. BUT some of the more well-endowed ladies felt like they didn''t give enough support. I really liked them though. There is also a brand called Glamour Girl that are more expensive and were a bit more fitted. I would maybe buy one of each kind and see what you like.

I really liked the nursing sports-bras from Motherhood. I only used them 5 weeks, but they worked great!

I had some sport nursing bras too that I liked to sleep in for support- but one thing to think about is exposing your belly. I loved the tanks b/c it kept my bottom half covered. I hated pulling up my shirt or tank or whatever when I was wearing the nursing bras. I did find some tanks that I could just slip off my shoulders along with the bra.

Anyways, I didn''t even consider that when I was buying my nursing stuff so something to think about. Just a personal pet peeve. I hate my stomach hanging out.
14.gif

i have one of the gillian o'malley tanks, non nursing, and i love the super soft material BUT i feel like the little shelf bra elastic 'digs' into my ribcage, like it is not soft lined. i tend to wrap the tank under the shelf bra when i wear it to have the material of the tank next to my skin instead of the elastic. does anyone else have that or is it just me? i am really sensitive about having stuff scratch on my skin.

oh didn't think about gap nursing, will have to check that out. i did get a medela nursing bra but i totally hate it, it's way too constricting. i hate having anything around my 'ribcage' where i feel like i can't breathe...i have never liked bras.

tacori, no we can take things with us from the walls but i hate leaving holes and marks yanno, so i tend to leave things like shelves etc behind and just buy them again. but for something like that we'd want to take with. i will have to look into how it attaches etc and how easy it is to remove.
