so were taking our engagement photos (YAY

) march 18th...what do we wear?

its going to be in downtown chicago, we are going to take some at the place where M proposed, and other cool places downtown...

i was thinking of wearing nice jeans and awesome shoes, and a cute coat and he would wear jeans too...is that to informal?

Not at all, it all depends on what kind of look you want. I think the most important thing is to be you, and if he usually wears jeans, then wear jeans. I know I can hardly get my FI out of jeans aside from a special occasion.

I don't think that's too informal. It depends on the look you want your photos to have. If you want more upscale, formal portrait-type photos, you might want to dress accordingly. If you're looking to just have great photos, with no formality to them, I don't think you could go wrong in the outfit you described.

ETA: I think we were posting at the same time.

haha...Sarah i cant get M out of jeans either...i had to use tears to convince him to wear a tie for our wedding (even i its a year away, i started having nightmares of him not wearing a tie) and no we arent really formal fancy pants type of people. i guess i answered my own question...thanks though

Haha yeah, I think jeans will be good then.

I got J to buy a pink shirt because it was on sale like 70% off. He has NEVER worn it.

As far as whether you should dress up or go more casual, I would base that on your everyday style. Jeans and a nice shirt or sweater are probably the most common outfits. Here''s what I provide to my couples:

When choosing clothing for a portrait shoot, opt for solid colors. Rich jewel tones work especially well. Stay away from busy patterns (which draw attention away from your face), bulky clothes (which make you look bigger), and turtlenecks (which make you look shorter and, well, neck-less). For truly timeless pictures that will look great for years, choose classic clothing styles rather than trendy outfits that will look dated as soon as the next fad comes around.

If you are posing with more than one person, make sure your clothing doesn''t clash! A family or engagement shoot will look dynamic when everyone is dressed a similar color and style. Try laying out all the outfits beforehand to make sure they go together well and that no one piece stands out too much.

And....we''ve all seen the outfits that "accidentally" turn see-through on the red carpet. Stick with nude or white undergarments to avoid any unintentional flashing.

And this is more for the wedding day but some of it is still applicable:

What looks good in person is unfortunately not always what looks best in pictures. A few careful decisions can make the difference between a good portrait and a great one!

If you are getting a facial, your eyebrows waxed, or your hair cut or colored, do it at least two weeks before your photo session to avoid any unhappy surprises. I would recommend against making a drastic change to your hair or makeup - pictures are best when they capture you as you usually appear. Plus, you want to be able to recognize yourself! If you do decide to try a new hair or makeup style, give it a trial run beforehand as well so you have time to get used to it and so you can make sure you really like it.

Keep makeup simple and use a matte powder to avoid shine. Because makeup gets darker in photos, avoid very dark colors, especially in lip liner. Bring your makeup with you for touch-ups between pictures to keep it fresh. Always put on a touch of lip gloss – that’s the one place you DO want shine! And don’t forget to make sure your makeup is waterproof (this goes triple for you brides!). Perhaps most importantly, stay away from sparkly or glittery makeup (slightly iridescent is fine). In photos, light will reflect off of individual pieces of sparkle and show up as white dots in the photos. It might look good in person, but it doesn’t work well for photographs.

If, worst case scenario, you wake up with a giant pimple the morning of your shoot, fight the urge to pop it! The red mark it will leave is more noticeable and harder to fix than the bump. If the blemish is already red or you couldn’t resist popping, dab Visine Eye Drops on it to help remove the redness, then cover it up with light makeup (even you gentleman can do this!).

Carry oil blotting sheets (found at all drugstores) with you during the shoot, especially if you tend to have oily or sweaty skin. This will help you look great the entire day and well into the night, even after your makeup has worn off.

Thanks for asking that question!! My FI & I are going to be havening are photos taken in May. I will be wearing a sun dress, trying to match my personality.

However a two year engagement I am trying to take baby steps of planning the wedding.

something simple and not busy. jeans and a dark top or a monochrome top. if you are going to wear a dark coat, have a light scarf.
