Question about off-round diamond and bezel setting

I am trying to round up potential OECs or transitional diamonds for a bezel three stone ring. I have one on hold at Old World Diamonds that is the top candidate and I am waiting on Adam to find some comparable diamonds so I can have a nice selection to choose from. This hasn't stopped me from looking elsewhere :naughty: . I found another OEC that may work, but it is slightly off-round around one edge. I know this is common in older stones and I wouldn't worry about it if were going to be prong set. I just don't want the misshapen-ness to be amplified once bezel set. Could a good designer "fake" symmetry, i.e. have the bezel be perfectly round even if the stone isn't? I just wanted to get input before moving forward.

I do not think that would be a problem unless it is significantly off round but you can check with the jeweler making the setting.

Thanks for the quick response. Antique stones are tricky. I don't think any of them are 100% round. It seems like the dimensions are always *slightly* off. I don' t think the local stone would be "mind clean" enough for me due to this but I feel like it is an important question to ask in regards to any old stone as they aren't as perfectly shaped as ideal stones. It's hard looking at super magnified pictures and gauging how noticeable it would be in person.

OEC are rarely off round at this point. In fact, I never see one...

If you talk about OMC I said yes, they are usually off round and can cause problem with bezel setting if the designer lack of experience.

I see off round stones all the time. I'm not considering any of these for purchase but here are two that exhibit what I'm talking about:

When I say off round I'm not referring to something almost square, I just mean not exactly symmetrical. There are rounder OECs of course, I just notice many that are slightly "off" in shape. I could always send a diamond for a slight re-cut/polish if need be, like Kelpie did with Single Stone. I am considering them to make my ring and they are well versed with older diamonds and their quirks.

Hopefully I'll find something soon though! I feel like I've looked at every antique stone on the internet.

Hiya Pixie!

Assuming that the stone(s) you pick is only slightly off-round, you ought to be OK. As a matter of fact, a stone's wonkiness is best hidden when set in a bezel, where a talented jeweler can set it in such a way that appears perfectly symmetrical!

Good luck :)

If the diamond is off-round in just one of the edges, it should be fine in a bezel setting. The only thing is that if a different jeweler from the one you are purchasing the diamond from will be working on the setting, you should let them know ahead of time so that everything is in accordance.
