Hello everyone. I am new here and hoping you can help. I recenly aquired a very lovely silver Filigree ring from an estate sale. There is no stone in it, but I was planning on having my daughter's birthstone placed into the center. As i was looking it over to see if I could find more about it-the metal info and such, the one thing or only thing I found was a letter "K". I have no idea what this means. I have come across a number of stampings, but not this-so hoping someone can shed a little light my way. Thanks~

My guess is that it is a nearly-worn-off marking like 14K. (You''re certain it''s sterling? Most antique filigree is gold, and antique 14K gold can be different in appearance than modern due to the high nickel content... also, you see antique dealers mismark antique metals fairly frequently, so unless it is marked sterling or .925, that''s my best guess. If it''s been sized, or worn for many years, the metal marking is probably worn down or completely gone.

Take it to a jeweler, they can acid test it to see what the metal is... the charge should be nominal to free.

Your best clue to the age, if that''s also what you''re trying to figure out, is usually not the markings but the style and manner of construction (die struck = 99.99% likely it''s vintage.)
