let''s say i bougth a 1 ct. stone, 10 years ago for $4000. now that same stone is selling for $6000 from the same vendor, since most vendors will only credit you with the $4000 that you orignally paid, now i want to upgrade to a 2 ct. and i''ll be paying today''s market price. so i guess my question is should i expect to get more than $4000 credit towards my upgrade ? so basically, their stone has gone up, but mine hasn''t. is it ever smart to do an upgrade, based on this kind of policy?

Hopefully your salary will have gone up as well in the past ten years. It still seems like you would be coming out on top considering the grand improvements in technology since then. Plus, you'd have to consider the vendor's investments in equipment, increases through his suppliers, etc., so I wouldn't expect any more than the original price paid. Just IMHO.
