Hi experts! I'm out of my league with colored stones but am considering this purchase. Any help deciphering whether this emerald is synthetic or real? Thanks for any help!!

Seller said it was all platinum and that the diamonds tested real. He must have inherited it and not known anything about it. The basket looks hand forged and the original velvet box is a promising sign. I'm praying the emerald is real. It's my dream ring!

It looks real to me. The colour seems more "blue toned" which is less desired, they tend to manufacture synthetic emeralds In the best "Emerald green" colour. Though it does seem to have some abrasion/ wear to the bottom right corner. Might be just the photo. The age and style of the setting would support it being genuine BUT people do swap out gems from old settings. Can you return it if it turns out not to be a mined from the earth Emerald? If you can, nothing ventured nothing gained (but that's my philosophy,)

I am not an expert, however, although I can see some inclusions in the pics posted, the stone appears to be quite clean/clear to my untrained eyes, and the colour is very pleasing to me as in a nice blue green.

And I like the bezel setting and the classic cut for the stone too.

The diamonds are not MRBs, and the stone does not appear to have much worn/scratch marks.

The OP does not mention what the ring is made of metal wise, and if it is platinum then it is another good sign that the emerald could be real.

Be warned that the velvet box that comes with the ring may be a replacement and not the original.

IMHO, it is worth getting it tested for certain.

DK :))

Based on the size I'd work off the assumption it's fake until proven otherwise. Meaning expect them to sell you it at a price that reflects lab grown or make some arrangements to have it tested

The metal is platinum and diamonds are old mine. The seller has no idea if the green stone is real. His grandpa purchased it in France in 1925 for his grandma and she left it to him when she died at age 103. I plan to send it to AGL when I receive it. It has some chips and probably needs a recut or polish at least but I love the setting and worry the stone won't fit if I recut it.

I don't think the metal tips it off as much as you'd hope. I do think there was a period of time were they were put in high end jewelry. It being with old cut diamonds might support that idea too so like I say just buy it if you love it and assume it's lab until proven delightfully wrong.

I would also say be vary very thoughtful before taking the stone out, I know you love the setting and removing a stone from the bezel could ruin it.

I think step one will be to send it to AGL to see if it is real. The shank is coming unattached and needs to be fixed but I worry to do that with the stone in the setting. Especially if it is glass as the laser would ruin it. I hope it I see r al but I won't hold my breath. I do really love the setting. Like a lot. The hand forged work on the basket is lovely and I love how old it is. Fingers crossed!

Hi. What is the end of the story? Was it real or synthetic? The ring is beautiful!

There is no way to tell from a photograph. It can also be a triplet or doublet as well, and those look very real from photographs. They also make some synthetics with inclusions, so buyer beware. Your best bet is to have it sent to AGL where It can be deemed as natural and you can also learn about the extent and type of treatment.

I sent it to Christie's and their senior gem gal evaluated it. It is indeed a doublet and appears to be quartz with green glue i between. She thinks there may have been a nicer gem in there at some point and was swapped along the way. Oh well!

I've seen the listing as well and in some of the photos I see a conchoidal fracture which could be an indication of synthetic.

Yes that's my listing. The stone is indeed chipped and was when I received it. So I'm selling it for the setting. I've adjusted the listing now that I have an idea of what the stone is.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. That's disappointing. My mil gave me her mother's "black opal". It turned out to be a doublet.

Well shit I didn't realize this was an old thread. I should keep my yapper shut from time to time (or have reading comprehension)
