Just thought I''d see what you guys thought about me getting "Big Mama" recut. I really like the Portuegese a great deal... Any suggestions on good gem cutters???

I love her as she is, but she''s showing some rubbing, and the original cut wasn''t too hot... Think I could get a bit more color out of her if I get her a face lift.

I think Big Mama (I love it) has nice color saturation, and she''s a pretty navy shade of blue. But if you''re not happy with her, then a recut would be a nice make-over. I''ve heard a lot of great things about Richard Homer. He does a lot of work with colored stones. You can get more information about him from winkjones.com.

would a repolish help any? i''d hate to see you cut that one.

I say why not. It seems to me you''d have enough to work with. I think it''s a great idea!

send her to Jeff white! Stat!!!!

I maybe wrong, but I''m pretty sure that neither Richard or Jeff do recuts anymore?

Ditto...I''d explore this first.

The best way is to have a cutter look at it. If there''s nothing "wrong" with it, why a recut? If there''s just some wear and tear, a polishing should do the trick.

I just saw a Portuguese cut sapphire on The Natural Sapphire Comany''s webpage. It was extraordinary. So that is why I thought about recutting.

I wouldn''t think that a Portuguese cut would be the best for that stone. It''s too dark. Dark stones do better with fewer larger facets than many smaller ones. I would think the stone is cut shallow, and that too wouldn''t work out for recutting as a Portuguese as this is a very deep cut.

Jeff did say that.

It is possible but the monetary loss is great. After all, a 2 ct sapphire is worth a lot more than after it''s cut into two 1 ct sapphires. Not only that, it will most likely cut into less than 1 ct each, more like 0.5 to 0.6 ct each.
