I am excited to share my new project. I have collected quite a few gemstones and trying to find affordable settings has been tricky. I purchased a few used rings on EBay but had to send them back because they wouldn’t work.

Well, I found one that I think will work! I took it to a jeweler and for roughly $300-400 he will be able to modify the setting to fit my Mahenge cushion spinel. My all in cost for the setting will be around $600-700 so I think that’s pretty decent if it all works out. And it’s even my size.

I have never used this jeweler before but he’s an older guy who seemed cheerful confident about this project so I’m taking the risk. He couldn’t stop telling me how pretty my spinel was.

Also, the emerald is a Chatham which I thought was worthless so I offered to let him keep it and he said it could be worth $400. I still don’t want it but not sure what to do with it.

Here’s the setting and the spinel. Wish me luck!

Thanks! I think I’m equally excited that I may have found a local jeweler. He does custom designs too but I don’t know if they would be affordable. I will see how this one goes first.

Sell the emerald? The spinel would look lovely in such a setting!

I wasn’t sure how hard it would be to sell but I suppose I can try.

Beautiful setting, stunning stone! Can't wait to see the finished product.

I love your spinel! Great color! Can't wait to see what it looks like set!

That looks awesome! Your spinel is so bright! :kiss2:

The color of that gemstone is to die for!

Thanks! I can’t get over how gorgeous it is. And now I can enjoy wearing it instead of playing with the loose stone!

Such a great setting to showcase your gorgeous stone! :kiss2:

Wow! That came out great! It is such a luscious color! Amazing job repurposing a previously loved setting. It's wonderful when that works out. Enjoy it!

It’s beautiful and it looks lovely on you! I love the motion and flow in your setting, and the rich gold color. Gold is high now so you did really well by being creative!

I love spinels! If you can safely get a fluorescent photo to share, please post it for us on the Fun with Flourescence! thread. Thanks!

It turned out so well! Love how that spinel just jumps out at you

Thanks! I actually posted it there when I got the spinel. Here’s the link. It’s post #110

It's really gorgeous!

Beautiful spinel. Nice job finding that setting. I do that all the time. There's a vendor on Etsy 'Wilson Brothers' I've bought ring settings from to get my gemstones set in.

I've also gotten a custom ring from Ivey and Rose, then decided I didn't like the ring!!! Oh well...

It's certainly less costly to buy used 14k gold ring settings than new settings. The trick is to find one that's right for your gemstone.

Great score on the ring setting -- and I love your spinel.

Oh, also be careful choosing a jeweler to set your gorgeous spinel.

I bought a Burmese pigeon blood red spinel in 2019 brought it to a 'trusted' jeweler to set in my ring. The jeweler smashed my beautiful spinel in a metal drawer and scratched it all the way across the table and chipped it where the table and pavilion meet.

He denied culpability, but sent it to be recut. He also blamed a lousy spinel for the reason it was damaged.

Thanks for the tips! It can be tricky to find used settings that work because most of them have calibrated gemstones in them and none of my stones are standard sizes.

I did that too with buying an Ivy Rose setting and then not liking the way it looked on my hand. I did that one backwards and had to find a stone for the setting and didn’t end up liking it so I sold the whole thing.

That’s a horrible story!

Luckily my jeweler did a good job but I was worried about that since I didn’t have a jeweler that I knew was good.

Congrats, @CaseyLouLou! It looks fab!! I just love when folks upcycle or repurpose stones and mountings. I'm not quite so clever.

Fabulous stone and ring! You did a great job.
I have a pink asscher cut spinel that I had set in rose gold. It seems to prefer artificial light. Does yours have a preference?

I don’t think mine has a preference. It looks pretty nice in most lighting but probably the best in natural light. I haven’t had it long enough to notice a trend yet.

I would love to see a photo of yours.

Rats, thought I had one but it was probably eaten by Google.
Much smaller (1 ct.) and pinker than yours and yours is much more saturated.
How can a pink spinel be wrong, whatever the size and color?
