Fire opals can be very intense orange-red, however, I believe they are even softer than Tourmalines.

Rhodonite, but hardness is only 5.5-6 and it has perfect cleavage. However I have seen some crystals from Brazil with a wonderful saturated red colour, e.g. this mineral specimen on Mindat:
