Hi guys

Looking for some advice here. I had this rose gold smoky quartz ring which I loved and treasured as it marked a new era for my move to Canada a few years ago. Recently I hit this ring on a cabinet so hard that I scratched the stone and broke the setting :(

Ive taken the setting to a few local jewellers here in Toronto and no one seems to want to touch it. This piece has a lot of meaning to me, and although it is not expensive or valuable I'd really like to have it repaired so I can wear it again.

Any suggestions on who to reach out to or the best course of action is really appreciated. I live in Toronto but travel a lot for work so I will take it to wherever it needs to go! Any one have experience in this sort of thing?

I actually was able to find the exact ring I got, here is the stock image (http://www.colombianemeralds.com/-14K-Rose-Gold-Smoky-Quartz-Diamond-Ring-_p_133.html):

The problem you have is that by the time you pay to recut the stone and fix the setting it might work out better just to buy a new ring. Having said that, you could totally repolish the stone, it will lose a decent amount in size if you do that, but if it is sentimental to you perhaps another sturdier setting for it might be worth considering. Jewellers possibly don't think it is worth fixing the setting because they cannot guarantee that a ring like that will not break again.

Which jewellers did you talk to in Toronto? Have you tried madeyoulook.ca? They have like 20+ goldsmiths/artisans supposedly, and after seeing their works in the store and consulting with them about another project, I am convinced of their skills with setting gems and doing custom repair work.

Wow, no I didn't consult with madeyoulook but I just checked their website and they do look very capable. I'll definitely make an appointment and see what they can do. Thanks so much!
Side track, I just picked up a piece from Jeffs latest gemscoop. I was thinking DK for setting but maybe I will try these local guys. Voce, were their prices reasonable when you spoke to them?

I think so. I only asked about solitaire settings, and ended up having them set a roval pink tourmaline that I'm planning to gift my mother-in-law for her birthday. They asked $65 CAD to set the stone in a semi-mount. Quoted me about $460-470 CAD for 14k custom gold setting and $260-$270 CAD for custom silver setting, which was all-inclusive (materials, labor, and CAD design).

Haha, I just realized the same acronym, CAD, stands for more than one thing. In the first 3x I used it, I meant to denote Canadian dollars vs US dollars. In the 4th instance it means computer aided design. I usually buy in USD, but I thought $470 CAD (~$360 USD) for a custom solitaire setting is reasonable.

If this is at all comparable to what DK charges, I'd give the local guys a try first, since you'd 1) get your ring sooner and 2) save on customs/shipping. The only reason to go DK is he has a lot of experience with certain types of setting styles that madeyoulook may not have. For more basic styles such as halos, though, I fully trust the people at madeyoulook.

Please do give them a visit! They have works of various local jewellery designers on display, so you might even find something inspiring at the shop.

Congrats on the alexandrite from Jeff White. I'm sure it will be gorgeous no matter what setting you pick for it.
