Hi everyone. I''ve been playing with the idea of replacing the center stone of my wedding ring. At first I thought of changing to an asscher or cushion cut diamond, but now want to put in a colored stone- most likely a spessartite (my fav). The ring currently has a .71 ct oval diamond. If I do this I think my ring might have to be re-vamped to fit a new stone- not just a simple replacement of the head. Are there places out there that will cutomize rings using existing materials, i.e.-I supply the materials, they customize it for me? I do have a local guy who does nice work, but not nice enough for this. If I do this I want it to be the best it can be. Thank you for any help.

Jess

Oh you want to change the part that holds the stone. Do you want to melt down the ring?

Thanks innerkitten. No, I don''t want to melt my ring down. I want to customize it to fit a square, cushion, or asscher cut colored gem. Possibly a 2.38 ct. square spessartite I just purchased. I originally thought of a new diamond but quickly realized I''m a colored gemstone gal!. Here is my recent thread from rockytalk where you can see a picture of my ring. Next I will attempt to post a picture of what I''d like my ring to become. That might help you guys help me better. My idea may be impossible without melting down my ring, but that is why I''m posting this. I don''t know much at all about making rings-I just like to wear them

Here is what I''m aiming for. Not this exact design, of course, but something similar- not too wild about the basket type prongs, especially if I use the garnet-also, would keep my 4 princess side diamonds instead of just the 1. Does anyone think my ring could be converted, or am I probably expecting too much? Thanks again for any help.

I see. Yes the setting you have could totally become something similar. Do you have a photo of the spess? have you gotten any quotes yet from jewelers?

Innerkitten, I can''t thank you enough for helping me with this. The server won''t let me post the pic on here but here is the website. You have to scroll down a little- it''s the 2.28 ct square cut stone. I have not recieved it yet-should come within the next few days but I am really excited! Spessartite is not only my favorite gemstone, but also my and hubby''s birthstone

. Still think my ring is doable? As far as jewelers, I just thought of doing this and decided to post here first to get help and opinions. If I could send it out to someone reputable and who does great work than that is what I''ll do. I could check with my jeweler but don''t quite trust him for this one.

Try Knox Jewelers out of Minneapolis. They do a lot of custom work and their pieces are very reasonably priced and very nice. I was just there last week and they are a great little shop. Some PS''ers have had pieces made from them and have been very happy.

That spess looks beautiful! I''m no help in guessing whether or not it will be an easy task, but I think it will be beautiful!!

The neon one? It''s really pretty :)
I agree contact a few jewelers with the info you have the the pic of the ring you like ( I like it to by the way). Then get back to us and tell us if they say they will do it!!

Hi everyone! Well, here is my new wedding ring. My jeweler did a great job recreating the design I wanted- I do need the prongs fixed but am going out of town so will do it when I return. Otherwise I''m very happy with the end result. I can''t seem to post a hand shot because my file is more than the limit. I do not know how to make it smaller. Anyway, I wear this ring with my diamond and platinum anniversary band and they look fabulous together. The color of this spessartite is just amazing. I particularly enjoy how it changes from darker to bright neon orange depending on the lighting. Thanks for looking! Hope you like it as much as I do.

Love the color in that stone. Looks very nice in your setting.

I thought RED GARNET was the January birthstone. Are you claiming Spess? I''d like to too!

Thanks stonehunter. I guess I assumed any garnet can be a birthstone for January. I''ve never cared for the red variety, but when I found out about spessartite, tsavorite, demantoid etc... I claimed them all!

Yes. I don''t like RED GARNET so I''ve always been very unhappy with my birthstone. I think I''ll follow you and claim all other garnets instead.

But I think I really like Spinels...so many colors and good hardness for everyday wear.
