I am considering purchasing this stone (ID from GRS in Switerland)
Weight: 9.10 carats
Shape & Cut: Cushion, Antique
Dimensions: 12.33 x 12.20 x 7.72 mm
Clarity: Lightly Included (LI1), Loupe Clean
Depth: 63%
Heat Enhancement: None; "Natural Color"

This is the desciption from the seller

• A gem color antique cushion cut 9ct Purple Garnet (Rhodolite). Origin: Rajasthan, India.

• This garnet was mined and available on the market about 10-12 years ago. Sizes above 8ct were rare even when it was mined. Very little is available today especially in large sizes such as this.

• The stone is 85% tone with loupe clean clarity. The brilliance is 80-100% with excellent symmetry and ideal 63% depth. The size and shape are the most preferred for collectors.

• The stone shows an almost pure purple with very very little red secondary color and sharp clarity.

• Please contact me if you are interested in other pieces. We located an old collection of stones in North India and could help you negotiate further pieces.

• The purchase included Switzerland''s GRS certificate stating country of origin and natural color

May I ask for you talented bunch to critique the selling points

TIA

Seems rather dark if it''s 85% tone. Would be nice to see a photo. I never heard of GRS grading a rhodolite garnet, it''s not as if it''s a very valuable gem, even in large sizes. How much is the seller asking if you don''t mind?

85% tone is too dark for my personal taste but some people don’t mind that. I’ve also been having issues with posting pictures so you aren’t alone in that.

I am surprised how often an opinion is asked of a gem but no price is given.

Any gem has some price at which it is acceptable for somebody.
oh, so true! no matter what we think of the stone, it may be a prime example for its price.

Finally! The pic uploaded! I must have tried at least 20 times yesterday.

The stone''s cost is approx $600. The 85% tone does seem dark but from the pic, the colour seeems dazzeling. I have asked the vendor to send me pics in different lighting sources, they are yet to do so.

The tone is too dark. It will be very dark in real life. I would not buy it because you'll only enjoy it if it's in bright light where you see a sparkle here or there. As for the color being dazzling, I beg to differ. There's really nothing exceptional about that color to me because it suffers from too much extinction.

This is a much finer example of a rhodolite garnet that doesn't suffer from being overly dark, is purple, and very well cut.

That's the funny thing about collour, it is totaly subjective. The colour of the the Umbalite Garnet doesn't sing to me at all. However, the stone being too dark was my main concern. I do love the berry coloured flash it shows in the picture, I am concerned about how it would look IRL. Perhaps the darkness will outplay the colour which I find so captivating.

I'll wait for the vendors other pictures to make my desicion, thanks for your help.

way too much extinction. imo, over priced for so much extinction in this garnet.

Lovely cutting brings out the purple flash but that could be the only good point about the stone. Unless you plan to only wear it outdoors or under strong lighting, it will probably be dark most of the time.

Beautiful photo of a stone that will sadly look black 99% of the time on your hand unless you can get a teeny tiny flash-light built into the setting and back light it...
Come to think of it, could there be a market for such a thing???

It turns out the stone is already on hold for one of their favoured clients. I still think it's pretty.

although, Pandora, perhaps you're right... you'ce come across a niche market for blackened stones!

Way over priced IMO. I have an 8 ct garnet that color that is about 85 percent and I paid 10$ for it. It looks beautiful in direct sunlight where I get the grape colored flashes, but it is black in all other light.
