This is just complete curiosity because I have no clue.

When your looking at settings for erings, studs, etc. they are usually sold for certain mm stones or by ct weight (.25, .50, etc.).

How are sizes inbetween set? Would a .86 go in a .75 head or a 1 ct. head?

Again just curious to learn

I PMd you but this might help others so since I can post from work (stupid home computer) Ill do so--

When they were setting my .86ct stone they used a .75. They were having problems with "slippage" when trying to mount in the 1ct head because they had to bring the prongs in and it just didn't want to level. Im glad the guy is a perfecctionist.

He said in the longrun it was easier to spread them slightly then bring them in.

My round diamond measures 6.1 mms. That is in between a .75 and 1.00 carat stone. It went into a head made for a .75c stone.

The settings are made to fit stones for a particular size, as in diameter. Manufacturers describe them as 1ct heads instead of 6.5mm heads because that's the way people describe diamonds. Other gemstones can have substantially different weight/diameter rations and so the name attached to the head will seem almost silly. It's nothing to worry about. People often ask, for example, for the jeweler to use a slightly large head so that the stone sits lower in the mounting. There are several styles of settings where it is possible to move the prongs in and out by quite a bit although there are some that are pretty specific about what they will accept. Your .86 might go into either head, or into one that is made for a 0.90 depending on some of the other issues.

I'd go with the bigger head, and set it lower. I have a 1.2ct round which is mounted in a head made for a 1 ct, and I don't like the look at all. It sits up too high. I've been wanting to get it mounted in a 1.5ct head so that the pavillion of the diamond can sit lower in the bigger head, and have them cut down the length of the prongs a little. Does this make sense?
