I am torn between platinum and white gold for my 2ct princess cut G color diamond. I have been told my a couple of jewelers to get white gold instead of platinum and that I would not be happy with platinum. What is your opinion? I really like the weight of platinum, but I don''t want to be disappointed.

Hi Sparkler,

I am sure that you will get many opinions going both ways, some will say that they love platinum for it's many benefits, others will say that they love their white gold and balk at the thought of paying for platinum. I personally prefer platinum. I love the weight of the ring, I feel that the stones are more secure and I think that most of all, I love knowing that the platinum is not being worn away. I think of my grandmother who had to get a new gold wedding band around their 45th wedding anniversary, the original band was worn down to just a thread of gold. That will not happen with platinum.

Having said all of that, I have quite a few rings in white gold, but these are my right hand rings and they do not get the wear and tear that my wedding set gets.

You did not state in your post if this is for your engagement ring, however, if you are wearing a 2ct stone as a right hand ring, then you are a lucky, lucky girl : ) If it's for your engagement/ wedding ring, I would go with platinum, but that is my preference.

Thanks Bridget! It is my 5 year anniversary gift from my hubby! I have been told that platinum is going to be dull after a short time. Has your platinum dulled? and how easily is platinum scratched?

I prefer platinum because I actually like the "dulling" you refer to. Platinum's unique patina is very attractive to me, as is the weight. I love feeling the weight of my rings on my finger.

But it is a very personal decision. White gold is lovely too. When they are both new, it is very difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye between platium and gold but over time, the platinum does get the patina. You could always have the platinum rhodium dipped as a means of keeping it shiny. In terms of the G color diamond, I think white metal is perfect.

Hi Sparkler,

I'm with Jennifer, I take the patina that platinum gets as part of having the platinum, and adding to the beauty of platinum. I'm not sure how easily it is scratched. I'm now closely inspecting my wedding set and my wedding ring, which I never take off at all has the patina on it all over, my engagement ring is "duller" at the bottom where it rubs on things, but shiny and new looking at the top where nothing really touches it. Another thing that adds to my preference is that unless I want the ring shiny and take it in to a jeweller to polish it, it will never *need* maintenance, however white gold can sometimes need to be replated to look white again. After some use it yellows a bit and you'll want to factor that into your choice as well. I am sure that some people have had white gold that they have never had to have replated, but I am also sure that they are many who have.

Which ever choice you make, we must see the ring : )

Jennifer I like the weight of platinum too. When I first got my ering I thought it was neat that it had some weight to it.
