Does anyone know if there are any on-line vendors of rose cut colored gems?

Perhaps a custom cutter will be willing to cut one for you. There is a very good reason why rose cuts are not popular in coloured gemstones.

I apologize if I''m thread-jacking... what is a rose cut?

Unfortunately, due to PC issues, I cannot link anything. A rose cut is a very old design where there is really no pavilion. The back is completely flat like a cabochon. Also, the crown is domed like a cabochon but instead of being smooth, it is faceted with either 12 or 24 facets.

Interesting-- thank you very much.

A cutter can design a rose cut for you or use any number of the designs that are currently in circulation to cut what you want.

Thank you for your replies! I am not sure of if I dare to "order" a gem. What if I don''t like it when it is ready? Also what is the reason for why this cut is not popular in coloured gemstones?

Generally not much brilliant or sparkle.

plus weakness of color. But many of the custom cutters have designs for stones with high, dome-like crowns that look rose cut like but have full pavillions

For some reason I like "paler" gems. Would you like to share what custom cutters that have these dome-like crowns that look rose cut?

Basically any of the cutters who have Jeff Graham design books or who have gem cad, which is almost all of them in one way or another. Designs for domes can be found on Jeff''s site if you are looking for examples.

Yes I was thinking about Jeff Graham when I wrote that. The design "Button" stands out in my mind but mostly because I was considering buying a stone he had cut in it, but then...alas I didnt get it. There was a whole series of cuts in this style he was developing and it would be hard to find a precision cutter today who hasnt been influenced by Jeff

Here is Jeff Graham''s "Button"

Try Dan Stair.
Here is another one of Jeff's. "Blush Rose"

There''s really no need for a full pavilion and in fact a full pavilion with really high dome doesn''t make for a very nice looking stone. The attached picture is a high domed tanzanite of medium color which I cut for a friend who had a thing for antique settings. This stone was actually cut with a pavilion at substantially less than the critical angle for this material, (around 33 degrees if I remember correctly). A set of apex facets where the table would normally be helped to keep the stone fairly bright.

Peter Torraca has a garnet and a peridot that are rose-cut esque.
