Rose gold solitaire - suggestions for making it unique?

Hi all! I have always wanted a simple rose gold solitaire with a thin plain band (think Brian Gavin's tapered Tiffany style half round, but with a lower setting). However, my boyfriend just informed me that he's going to a jeweler friend in Johannesburg to custom make my ring. I'm so excited, but now I'm wondering if I should ask for something a little more unique?

This is what I've guided him to so far:

(Sorry, please see the bottom of the post for image #2)

However, I absolutely love @noelwr's 10 prong solitaire. I was also thinking maybe I could ask to add thin side baguettes? The only thing I know I don't want is a pave band for the engagement ring.

Any other suggestions on how to add a little spice to a tapered plain band solitaire without being too over the top? I do love the 8 prong an 10-prong look!

Also, any suggestions on finding a channel set wedding band that would sit flush to a lower set diamond engagement ring?

Thanks in advance!

Was also thinking something like:image_3678.jpg

I love noelwr's set:image_3681.jpg

My boyfriend wants a yellow gold band like:

image_3679.jpg

So her set is my inspiration!

image_3680.jpg

I can't really tell if her ring is rose or yellow gold?

Last question -- any recs on finding a channel set band that would sit flush with a lower setting solitaire engagement ring?

Thanks!!

ALL of those choices are beautiful & would compliment your stone very well. I think you should hold off having your bf make this ring till you can nail down a couple styles. Maybe spend some time taking apart some of the pics you have saved. Take this gallery, add to this halo, to these prongs & to this shank..voila.. Sounds easier said than done. :loopy: But it can be done. The flip side, have him set the stone in a very inexpensive solitaire setting for the man to propose, THEN take the time, less stress , & choose a setting. ;)) This way he gets his proposal (as do you) & you won't stress out knowing you can pick your setting preference with time on your hands. :appl: An idea, he may or may not go for.

All the best on your proposal!

I also love an "interesting" solitaire. I'll post a few favorites where a band could likely sit flush. Most of the ones you've posted would not allow a band to sit flush. I've always thought that WF's 'Honey' channel set band would be lovely with a solitaire: http://www.whiteflash.com/wedding-rings/honey-channel-set-diamond-wedding-band-687.htm

Ritani tulip (2mm version): https://www.ritani.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-diamond-cathedral-tulip-engagement-ring-in-14kt-white-gold/5339

Pirouette ring (maybe without a doughnut so band could sit flush?): http://www.brilliantearth.com/Pirouette-Diamond-Ring-White-Gold-BE1M6KL-1153260/
My cousin has the Tacori 2503 and a version of it would be lovely in rose gold: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-cousins-tacori-2503rd-and-wf-aca.214112/ and Tacori site: http://www.tacori.com/2503rd75 (her band sits flush)
Maybe something like this floral-inspired ring (could be with 8 or 10 prongs instead of the way the stone is held in): https://www.etsy.com/listing/186367526/floral-aquamarine-engagement-ring-in-14k
Brian Gavin La Fleur: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/la-fleur-18k-white-gold-5936w18

Thank you so much!! These are all so helpful. I do love La Fleur!

I think I do prefer a very thin band for the engagement ring (even one that tapers in towards the diamond), and I think that combined with the fact that I prefer 6, 8, or 10 prongs (or 4 prongs that are set N, S, E, and W on the diamond) will make it difficult for me to find a band that will sit flush with my engagement ring.

I'm hoping since both are being custom designed it's something I could ask for? Honestly I'm not even sure if it's possible.

The above are all stunning solitaires, but I keep going back to this:

I'm just nervous that:

1) This is a high setting (hard to tell from the pic and when I asked the customer service rep she said it's not high?)
2) It will be difficult to find a wedding band to sit flush with the ring.

I know Mark Morrell makes wedding bands that set flush with a 6 prong solitaire, so I'm hoping it can be done!

Nothing is going to sit flush with that kind of setting (edited to add: unless you get a curved band), because the doughnut juts out too much, and you're going to have a gap. Maybe if they made the head more like this setting, but with 6 prongs? But then the diamond is going to be sitting really, really high--which doesn't seem to be your preference. http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/classic-truth-solitaire-18k-rose-gold-5369r18

Or something like the Freya, which appears to have 6 prongs but no doughnut: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/freya-18k-rose-gold-5985r18 You can see better photos on the white gold version: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/freya-18k-white-gold-5985w18

For whatever you decide, I'd ask the vendor to show you a photo of the ring next to a band, so you can see how much of a gap there really is, and if you can live with it.

Thank you! This is probably a very dumb question, but what is a doughnut?

I'm actually considering asking the vendor to make a curved band (I asked my boyfriend, and she's happy to make a matching band to go along with the engagement ring). However, I feel like the curved band might look weird down the road if i ever wear it alone.

As an aside, any recommendations on best places to look for a man's yellow gold wedding band? Any thoughts on 14k vs 18k? I know 18k is more pure, but it sounds like 14k would hold up better over the years?

Thanks again for your hep!

The doughnut is the little circular shape that the prongs are based on. I'll attach a photo with the doughnut circled. Basically, if the doughnut juts out more than the shank, a straight band cannot sit flush. Not all rings have a doughnut, and some doughnuts are small enough and don't stick out more than the shank, so bands can sit flush--you just have to make sure that's possible if you really don't want a gap, which is why I suggested getting photos.

I think curved bands can be nice, but it's a personal preference if you will like wearing a curved band without the engagement ring. Maybe you could get a straight band, too? :naughty:

As for men's wedding bands, the best prices I've ever seen are at e-wedding bands: http://www.e-weddingbands.com/store/gold-wedding-bands-main.html 14k vs. 18k is also a personal preference. Nearly all my white gold jewelry is 18k and my husband's band is also 18k to "match" (his preference). It's fairly easy to polish or re-rhodium plate either type, though, if your future DH prefers a shiny look.

Maybe something in the gallery?? I LOVE the simplicity of the top down view of the first one you posted. I think the baguettes are distracting. I just love a clean, simple RG solitaire.

Low set and flush don't coexist. I showed you in the other thread the only lowset setting I've ever found that was flush fit.

Thanks for the suggestions! I feel like I'm getting more and more confused about what I want  because now I am also loving the cushion cut with a double prong:

I'm thinking of taking a trip to Good Old Gold this weekend to decide if I want a brilliant round, old european round, brilliant cushion, or old european cushion. oof so many decisions! i do think the vintage cut diamonds look lovely with rose gold.

This is also so pretty

My custom setting by GoG is fairly low set. There is no donut. I am currently wearing it with a palladium band from eweddingbands.com.

I'm not sure that this would work with a diamond band, as the diamonds would likely scratch my prongs.

I guess my question would be: why do you want it to be low-set? Are you concerned about something in particular with having the diamond set a bit higher?

Also, if you go with a 4-prong setting or a setting with double-claw prongs, I think having a flush fit with a band will be easier. Also, if you go with a channel set band vs. a pave or prong-set band, you would avoid issues with the diamonds scratching the prongs of the ring, regardless of how many prongs you would have on the engagement ring.

I think visiting a jewelery store and seeing what looks good on your hand is a good idea. :appl:

Thanks, all! I think I mostly just prefer the way a lower set ring looks on my hand. Plus I do worry a bit about catching/snagging on things.

I'm excited to go try some more rings on!

If the issue is prongs, have you considered a bezel?

I have! Not a huge fan unfortunately.

Good idea on visiting GOG! I think seeing the different stones in person and setting options will be a huge help to you. Once you get a better idea of what you like then you come up with some ways to make it perfect for you! :appl:

I, too, am looking for rose gold solitaire with a thin band where the wedding band would be able to sit flush against the ering too! Where is the setting from the first picture from? That looks really nice!

From Brian Gavin, I actually was thinking of getting http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/erika-fishtail-pave-18k-white-gold-5810w18 and customizing to get it without the side stones. Nothing too unique, but you could always add a surprise diamond on the inside of the band!

Hi! That's so pretty!

The set in picture one is from a store in NYC called Michael C Fina. I agree they look great together - I love the solitaire setting because it's 4 prongs set N, S, E, W, which I find more appealing that the typical 4 prong solitaire for some reason.

Hi Lily,
I have a rose gold solitaire with NESW prongs that fits flush to my wedding band.

It's very comfortable and easy to coordinate with many different types of bands. I've been thinking of resetting periodically because I've been bouncing between wanting something more ornate but then going back to loving the simplicity of a solitaire.

This would allow a flush fit. It's by A Jaffe.

My advice is to absolutely not have a solitaire custom made. There are plenty of great solitaires out there and to try to reproduce it to turn out exactly like you want might be a disaster. Honestly, there is just no reason to do it. I like the BG Tiffany half round and do not think it is too high. I have the Vatche 6 prong ring that is similar and there is just barely a gap. Rings are not glued together (unless you have them soldered together) so they do not naturally sit flush all the time even if they can.

I would recommend sticking with a round unless you go up in carats and get something like an August Vintage cushion. Cushions usually face up smaller than rounds.

Ksmom has one of my favorite rose gold sets with a plain solitaire.

@lemoncookie, your set is AMAZING! I love it!

Diamondseeker, just curious as to why you recommend against customizing a solitaire? Thanks!
