It's a lovely necklace, earrings & bracelet set (a demi-parure or suite, eh, Danny?) -- somewhat modern & spiffy for HM. Looks very nice on her.

Agreed, well, you know I like gold.

Well, the photo from the State Visit makes me think it is. And if we think about all the Lalas' lavish and elaborate jewels, it becomes even more likely that the late King Hassan II was the actual presenter of the set/suit/demi-parure.

What does being furious because of sb's unpunctuality have to do with (not) wearing a present from him, dear Alexander? And would you please shed some more light about that unpunctuality, please?

What happen to Diana's gold band she wore with her famous ring????

Of course it could be from King Hasan.

HM made a state visit to Marocco. And there was this famous Diner with the native horse games (Which is really interessting to see, by the way). And the King let HM about 3 hours waiting - without any refreshments - in the heat of the desert.
HM took this with her famous "we are not amused"....but, of course the Marrocan return visit was a year later.

By the way, may you know how HM insists of beeing punctual. There was an other visit (may an ambassador or so) and he arrived 5 minutes too early. teh secretary aksed friendly HM if she would'nt see him some minutes before the scheduled time. the aswer was " the appiontment is 10 o'clock. Not five minutes later or earlier."

Thank you for sharing these stories, Alexander. I feel sorry that HM had to wait for three hours in the desert. I hope she enjoyed the horese show.

BTW, Queen Elizabeth II's State Visit to Morocco was in 1980, while King Hassan II's to the UK was in 1987.

when I remember right. she wore a black dress, which she purchased shortly before her death (must be a Walker) and a rosary (a gift from mother Teresa), as some letters or photos from her sons.

She was buried in a Walker long sleeved black wraparound dress she had recently bought, right. With a rosary gift from Mother Theresa. I don't think I've seen any mention of her wedding ring, but I really doubt she would have been buried with it -- it was not a memento of anything happy for her and she was no longer married to Charles. She certainly didn't wear it anymore. Maybe her sons have it as a keepsake -- but of what? The sensible thing, in my opinion, would be to melt it down & return it to the nugget used for royal wedding rings, since that is pretty tiny by now. I read somewhere that the amount from the Welsh gold nugget used in each ring is much smaller, to make it last longer. People might be superstitious about using any part of her ring, though, even if it's mixed w/other gold.

Alexander and Laurie, thanks for the details about Diana's funeral. So, it's likely that the gold band is still around.

Laurie, are you sure Diana stopped wearing her wedding ring after the divorce? The same argument could be used for the engagement ring, yet she continued wearing it (I believe). Prince Charles also was divorced (and later in the eyes of the Church a widower), but he did continue wearing his ring untill his second wedding. Or maybe it was a memento of sth happy for him? And actually, both The PoW and his late wife Diana have at least two happy mementos from the engagement and the wedding - Princes Willian and Henry.

About the Welsh gold nugget - on page 239 fellow poster fogdancer said that "in November 1981, the British Royal Legion presented the Queen with a 36-gramme piece of 21-carat Welsh gold for future royal wedding rings."

Bobby

Who wants to take bets on whether or not William will restore Diana's HRH? It will be in his power to do so if he ascends the throne.

Bobby --

I'm attaching some photos of Diana; I believe all are from 1997, some may be '96. Doesn't seem she wore her wedding ring. I doubt many women wear the wedding band after a divorce, though. She did wear the sapphire sometimes, but if I had that in my drawer, I'd wear it too! She must have loved it. Thanks for the info on the gold nugget, I didn't see that, interesting. I'm glad to hear it! It's a nice tradition.

Oh, Laurie thank you for the photos! I should've done my homework! Obviously Diana didn't wear the ring after the divorce. I also noticed that she didn't wear it at the Swan Lake premiere - her last public engagement.

How can you restore the title(s) of a dead person? If Diana, Princess of Wales was alive today (and at the time of William's ascension) I can see him, as King, giving her the HRH. And maybe even creating her a Princess and/or a Duchess.

The sovereign is the font of all honors. He can restore it posthumously if he chooses.

Have you noticed that Henry VIII's first (and best IMO) wife was demoted to the title of Dowager Princess of Wales (in reference to her marriage to the King's deceased older brother) but she's buried under the name Katherine Queen of England? No one refers to her as the Dowager Princess of Wales today.

I deplore the entire concept that the divorced wife of a prince alone among a family including the woman's own children should be singled out as no longer "royal." It's misogyny and it's an injustice IMO.

Another question- how long do any of you think the Queen will live, and if Charles ascends the throne, at that point, how long will he reign?

Also, is there a chance that Charles will not reign?

Maybe our British residents could weigh in best on that, Danny. I'll blab anyway, though! Wouldn't be surprised if Charles doesn't take the throne for another 10 years or more, though he may assume increasing duties for his mother with time. I just read an article yesterday about Charles vs. William following HM. It said there is much sentiment that William should succeed his grandmother but that the British are pretty conservative when it comes to their traditions & even though Charles is less popular, he's still next in line. There is NO tradition of sovereigns abdicating (except Edward VIII & he was a loon), plus Charles has spent his life expecting & preparing to be king & William doesn't want to be.

Charles has lived a healthy life so may live as long as the Queen Mum (QE also!). Looks like a long spell of elderly rulers.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!

The wedding date is set for Friday, April 29. :((

The last week of April is our state testing week for students. The only way you can take off is if you are in hospital on your deathbed.

I was hoping for a summer date so I wouldn't have to take off from school. But I was also ready take a day off so I could watch all of the wedding if they did do it during the school year. But now, they picked the week that there is no way I can take off. :((

Okay, let's move on to something that will cheer me up. My list of tiara's for Catherine to choose from.

I know a lot of people are already talking about the Caimbridge Lover's Knot, especially if William and Catherine are made Duke and Duchess of Caimbridge. While it is a lovely tiara, I think William needs to be careful about overdoing it on the Diana-sentiment. Plus I see this as a great opportunity to bring out something that hasn't been seen in a while. Remember how pleased people were to see the Dehli Durbar reappear?

So here are my personal picks, in no particular order.

Small Scroll tiara: worn by Princess Anne until she got the Greek Key tiara. I think the size is appropriate for a princess-in-training.

Teck Circle Tiara

I like this one since it is convertible to a necklace. Part of the name comes from Princess Mary of Teck (later Queen Mary). It went to the late Princess Margaret who often wore it as a necklace when she wore the Poltimore tiara. The Poltimore tiara was sold, but the Teck circle was not on the auction list. Plus, since it was one of Queen Mary's pieces I doubt it was sold. It probably was returned to the royal family just waiting for someone like Catherine!

Teck Crescent Tiara

This is a tiara that really hasn't been seen for a long time. QEQM wore it once. I read that the base of the tiara has a really wide diameter that was necessary since in the early 1900's women often added false hair. I think this tiara would need some reworking, but we've got five months...plenty of time!

Strathmore Rose Tiara

Given to QEQM as a wedding present from her father the Earl of Strathmore. I think the rose theme is very pretty. I've read that this tiara is getting too delicate to wear, but just like with the Teck Crescent, 5 months is plenty of time to spruce it up.

Okay, I know I said no particular order, but the more I think about the more I think this is my favorite.

The Rundell Tiara

This was a gift to then Princess Alexandra from her groom, the future Edward VII. She didn't have much in the way of jewels so he gave her this tiara, plus a necklace, earrings, and brooch.

I think Catherine should get the whole set, sort of like how CP Mary of Denmark got the Ruby Parure. She's not coming in with a lot of jewelry and this would be a good solid parure to start with. The Rundell tiara can also have some elements change up which gives it some flexibility.

Edward was Prince of Wales, and Alexandra became Princess of Wales. William and Catherine will share that title someday, so there is a connection there as well.

And it hasn't been seen in a long time. Why should it sit around collecting dust when it could be enjoyed by Catherine?

If Queen Mary left this directly to Princess Margaret then it was her personal property, not Crown Property and so it's probably still int he hands of her children as private property.

Hi Neil!

Princess Margaret can't have received/inherited the Teck circles from Queen Mary as it was worn by The Queen Mother in her days as Queen. How it re-entered the royal family is a mystery to me.
And even if we assume that it was the Princess' property, why didn't her children sell it along with everything else? The same questions I have about the Papyrus tiara and the Turquoise parure. Maybe these were bought privately by The Queen?

Oh, LadyMaria, I'm so sorry you have to miss that day. I have a special interest in April 29 since it's my birthday and I always take the day off from work. I'm more than pleased to celebrate with the royal couple and share the occasion with them. Now if I could be gifted with one of those gorgeous tiaras as an extra-special birthday gift, I'd be more than happy to wear it in front of the TV and watch the nuptials in style! :naughty:

I was wondering if possibly Queen Elizabeth's head was smaller in size to that of Princess Mary Adelaide and the Marchioness of Cambridge (formerly Duchess of Teck)? It looks like a normal tiara in size here:http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/3143076/Hulton-Archive

PS: MJ, I'm so sorry to hear that you won't be able to follow the wedding closely. I remember ho happy and excited you were at the time of Victoria and Daniel's wedding (waking up early, dressing up, posting here, etc)

I's leaning towards this one. This nice floral tiara hasn't graced a beautiful head in quite some time. And of course it has a connection to Prince William's Scotish roots. If I were The Queen, I'd definitely send it to Gerrard's (or whoever the Crown Jeweler is now) to repair it, or possibly reset it in platinum.

Another nice choice, IMO, would be the second (scroll-/open-work) tiara QM's wearing here - http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/queen-mary-tiara.htm An obvious royal connection, yet 99,9% will not recognise it. And it looks nice.

*note - I'm talking about wedding present, not what Catherine will wear at her wedding. As far as a wedding tiara is concerned, I'd love to see Queen Mary's fringe. It'd be a nice traditon, I think.
