Royal Jewels

Bobby, what a very strange way to wear that tiara, especially for a portrait! You can't even see it. Does that hat have some significance? Reminds me of the British coronation.

--- Laurie

Yes, quite strange way to wear a tiara, especially as I believe Princess Victoria borrowed the tiara for a wedding in Germany. I hope someone has more details.

Yes, let's!

"another tiara designed by Prince Albert was the Gothic style "Diamond and Sapphire Tiara" loaned by the Earl and Countess of Harewood."

This one is still my favorite. The Gothic style is exquisite.

It is, Danny -- and in both those tiaras, not overwhelming. It could be an easy temptation to make them SO gothic they're full of gunk & corny, but Albert did them in such a restrained delicate manner, they come out simply graceful. In another time & social class, he could've been the equivalent of David Webb or Laurence Graff. I'm glad he had a chance to use those talents at any rate.

You're only 19 Bobby!! Shocked, as I thought you were 52. You have a lot of knowledge and write very well for being so young.

Happy birthday!

Thank you very much, TL! But I'm just curious - how did you decide that 52 is my age? Is this when you think one has learned enough and has polished his/her use of a certain language?

Alexander, this is what the website InternetStones.com says about the V&A exhibition:

It included 20 tiaras of British Royal origin, out of which four were designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria. The tiaras designed by Prince Albert included the "Ruby and Diamond Oriental Circlet Tiara" that was worn by Queen Victoria and later Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Another tiara designed by Prince Albert was the Gothic style "Diamond and Sapphire Tiara" loaned by the Earl and Countess of Harewood. But, there were no reports of the "Queen Victoria Emerald and Diamond Tiara" appearing at this exhibition, which seemed to confirm earlier reports of its dismantling.

Would sure love to be wrong! It's criminal to destroy that beautiful piece -- seems to me if someone (who didn't like it enough to keep it intact) could afford to buy it, they could certainly have bought other stones or a less historic & beautiful tiara. It doesn't make rational sense to me.

--- Laurie

Hi Laurie!

Do you know which tiaras designed by the Prince Consort, other than the Oriental Circlet and the sapphire tiara, were part of the exhibition?

I guess most of the teenagers I know do not write as eloquently as you do. I know, I'm sterotyping teenagers, and they're not all like that, but you really had me fooled.

Thank you for the kind words, TL! Someting I find interesting (in a negative way) is that sometimes I have the feeling that my command in Bulgarian (my mother language) is not as good as my command in English. I mean I'm fluent of course and use it very well, but not as eloquently as English.

How cute! They have to move and pack like the rest of us.

Cut to the scene where they scatter and servants come, unpack the boxes, and make everything perfect.

I don't know, Danny, I've always dressed like that to unpack when I move, don't you?

Bobby, as far as I know, those were the only 2 Albert tiaras in the V&A exhibit. The emerald & diamond tiara was part of the 1997 one organized by Geoffrey Munn.

Did Albert design any tiaras for Victoria other than those 3? He was one of the movers behind re-cutting the Koh-i-Noor. And the Oriental Circlet originally had opals in it until Queen Alexandra had it modified & rubies substituted for the opals.

What other jewelry did Prince Albert design? I found a few things. The Albert brooch (wedding present), which QE wears, of course, and QV had copies made for each of her daughters; HM also for Princess Anne.

There was also the Orange Blossom brooch (I love it) as an engagement present in 1839 and from then until 1846 he gave her other matching pieces to make up a parure. Gold, enamel & porcelain.

The Eagle brooch, given to each of Victoria's 12 bridesmaids, one now in the British Museum.

I also found some rather dreadful necklaces, earrings & bracelets made with the teeth of deer killed by Prince Albert on hunting trips and a brooch containing one of Princess Mary's baby teeth as the petals on a flower (ick). He also had bracelets & brooches made from pebbles picked up on trips he & Victoria made together & at least one of pebbles from their various residences, none very stunning.

What else?

Here is the Orange Blossom brooch -- has it ever been seen on anyone since Victoria? And the rest of the parure. After that one of the somewhat ho-hum pebble bracelets. Garrards mentioned a great quantity of pebbles entering their workshop for polishing & setting.

Also a bracelet with a miniature of himself in armor (QV had always wanted to see him thus!); the rest of the bracelet is designed like the garter collar.

How about other things Albert designed?

The eagle brooch is not my favorite. A little intense. :o

I wouldn't mind to have that pebble bracelet. The polished stones look really nice and the idea behind it is so very romantic!
About the orrange blossom head-dress: Is it still in the possession of the BRF? I am asking myself if I would like to see in on Catherine next April. But I guess the answer is "no", I'd prefer to see a proper tiara on her.

Lady Maria, you're not the only one to wear a tiara while doing housework - take a look at the Danish Crown Princely family's new photos for the German Vogue and you'll see TRH in front of many packing boxes. I suppose the boxes were used during the family's move to their new Copenhagen home.

The photo series - http://myroyal-myroyals.blogspot.com/2010/12/photos-from-mary-in-vogue-german.html

These are the best pictures I've seen of CP Mary and her baby bump! Thanks for posting Bobby!!

But seriously, we do appreciate your knowledge Bobby!

I know this is late, but

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOBBY!!!!!

So I did not see any of this for a few days due to the end of my PA training and sitting the national exam.

On the subject of jewels, I can't decide if I love or hate the turquoise bird brooch, but I find the pebble bracelet charming. Not so sure about the headdress, although I could see a some ladies past a certain age wearing it during the day, but never as a dress piece.

I love the story behind the orange blossom parure done by Prince Albert. Victoria didn't get it all at one time. One brooch came as an engagement present. The earrings and second brooch were for their 5th Christmas together. The tiara/wreath was for their sixth wedding anniversary. The dark green enamael "oranges" in the wreath were meant to represent the 4 children they had at the time. Victoria always wore the whole parure on wedding anniversaries until Albert's death in 1861.

The Orange Blossom parure is now part of the Royal Collection. I'd like to see The Queen wear at least the brooches and earrings someday.

Thank you for the reply, Laurie! I asked because the site you quoted says that 4 of the 20 royal tiaras in the exhibition were designed by Prince Albert. They must be wrong, however, as we know of only 3 tiaras from The Prince Consort and 2 of them were in the exhibition.

I don't think the sapphire brooch was Prince Albert's design - it's a very common design and the RC doesn't mention him. The Prince of course showed great taste by chosing it. I believe Princess Anne's brooch originaly belonged to one of Victoria & Albert's daughters' and eventually Elizabeth & Philip bought it.
The eagle brooch (which I'd love to see worn) was also not a Prince Albert desing. It was created by Charles Augustus Ferdinand du Vé, or at least that's what the RC tells us.

The satg tooth jewellry look a bit creepy by today's standarts, but they were OK back then.

Another jewel the Prince Consort designed for his wife is a brooch depicting their firstborn - Victoria, Princess Royal and later German Empress - as an angel with jeweled wings - http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/e...ext=sapphire+brooch&x=0&y=0&object=4834&row=1

Thank you Maria! It's very kind of you to say that.
Now when I think of it, I suppose that my English classes play a key role in forming my style of writing & speaking in English, because we are encouraged to use a more formal and wide range of words, no slang, etc. Of course when communicating with friends in Bulgarian I tend to speak like the children you teach, not to mention what we use in Skype and FB;)

Bobby

How forward thinking was Prince Albert. I have always been a fan of his jewelry designs. I wish they would mount the orange blossom on to a frame to turn it into a proper tiara. It reminds me so much of the modern tiara that Mary of Denmark wears every so often.

It is good to understand that there are times and places for the slang and shortcuts (like Facebook and texting) but other times and places require a more formal register (like final lab reports in my class!).

To show my appreciation, here is a picture of a young Princess Anne for you Bobby (and you may very well have seen it elsewhere already). I've seen this named as the "Mystery tiara." If it still exsists in a vault somewhere, I think it would make a distinct possibility for Catherine Middleton!

AnneMysteryTiara.jpg

Once again a big Thank you, Lady Maria! You know how much I enjoy these glittering photos!
I've seen The Princess Royal's Unicorn photograph before, but it's new to my collection. The tiara would look nice on Miss Midleton but I've never been sure if it was provided by the Princess/The Queen or if it was on loan from sb else (the photographer for ex.). And I'm sure very few people, other than those involved, know.

Bobby

What a romantic picture of Princess Anne. She was quite something in her heyday.

What a beautiful tiara that is on P. Anne. Very nice picture of her. I imagine you're right, Bobby, that somebody loaned it to her, since it hasn't been seen before or since & no info about it anywhere. They'd have to yank it back from me! She's quite something still, I think, Danny. One of the hardest-working of the royals & she genuinely does good for people.

I sort of agree about the Orange Blossom tiara -- I really love the brooch; hard to tell what the earrings would look like on, but the tiara, meh. On the right woman at the right time it might be really great, though otherwise it could look a little corny. (For these days, not in QV's time.) It is a unique design & graceful.

Didn't know you are in Bulgaria, Bobby. I hear that's a very beautiful place. I'd love to know more about it. Wow, your English is so excellent -- is it taught in all schools there? My husband is from Holland & they had to learn 3 foreign languages in school because nobody else speaks Dutch. When I met him he spoke English with a nice British accent; after being married to me for a couple of centuries he's gotten corrupted into an American one. Bobby, do you keep a huge file of photos & info? That must be necessary to have as much info as you do at your fingertips.

First, I'd like to appologise for being so off-topic!

Thanks Laurie, it's beutiful here indeed. If there's something you'd like to know, please feel free to ask:) A few times earlier in the thread I've stated where I'm from but you must've missed this and of course it's not sth important.
No, I don't think the level of English in all schools is high. I don't actually think it's possible to learn a foreign language fluently at school only, at lest if you're not in a lang. school. Most of what I know I've learned from private lessons and courses.
Most of the info I have in my mind. I have only some quotes from this and other sites and a couple of interviews/memoirs of royals. It's getting a bit messy now and I'll start writing things down. The rest is tons of photos.

Regards,
Bobby
