Royal Jewels

I know, gentlemen, that this will seem like a girlish indulgence to post yet another coronation dress. However, given the fact, that HM Queen Alexandra hung almost the entire Royal Jewel box on it, justifies my action I hope ;-).
And for the women-in-training who will reach this thread: this is one of the greatest "wife-husband diplomacy" stories of centuries which could be summed up as
the"do not argue theory":
Prior to the coronation Princes of Wales was fond of wearing Paris fashions exclusively. Her husband, the future King, asked her to wear British made gown in black (mourning of Q,Victoria)for the coronation. She said "Yes,of course".
Now picture this: the Coronation is in full swing and in walks the Queen-to-be in the latest Parisien fashion !
in a shade of meuve (lilac), hung from head to toe with all the jewels she could possibly find.
The eye witnesses described it ,that in the lights of thousands candles it looked as if she was walking in the middle of hundreds of small lightenings! The effect was so grand,as she calculated, that the King was so enchanted and forgave her right there! lol
Now come and look, and try to discover the jewels we all know....

ROFLOL!!!!

But seriously, I have given some thought to my next tiara purchase if I win this next teaching award I was nominated for. And I thought of doing a replica of a royal jewel. Here's one under consideration...

Here's another site I found, but they say all their stuff was sold out. I contacted them and they said they would get new ones in March...but the site still says sold out

Don't know if I can pull of anything from Butler&Wilson though!

May have already discussed this (sorry for my ignorance), but what tiara is Queen Mary wearing in the picture posted of a young Mary (dress sleves possibly done with pearls). Is it still in the family?

it's the Loop Tiara, made for Queen Mary (then princess of wales) by Boucheron in 1902. it disappeared after the WWI and it is believed that it was broken up to form some of the later made tiaras (Palmette, Fringe etc)

do you know if he "resurrects" some of the jewels that were broken down or which are known only from pictures?
Just curious..I really don't intend to purchase! LOL :-D
Thank you for sharing!
liza

yes it is.
most of the items survived only by black-and-white pics. (like the russian jewels) many of the items are really wounderful pieces of goldsmith art.

he not only make the jewels but also other things. f.e. made a replica of a french louise xv clock, decoration panels of false marble and so one..

the second one (smaler one) is this which was produced by Butler & Wilson. they also offered the Girls of GB Tiara in a nice version.

These two are wonderful examples of Lover's Knot tiaras, Alexander! The second one I like better. Congratulations for the great choices you've made!
But I must ask you where do you store all these? Do you have a voult perhaps? :cheeky:
And another question (Don't answer if you don't want to) - Who wears all these jewels?

I think in real they are both nice. the pics are not really the best.
sometimes I feel like Queen Mary wandering in the deep vaults of Windsor or Buckingham Palace. Some I store in class cases. unfortunately the jewels rest most time behind glass. - sometimes the came to light. because I also have got some other hobbies. one is when I see a royal dress - I sew it, and for the complete images or outfit, the matching jewels is a must.

I believe the Loop tiara was only worn for that occasion (the 1902 Coronation) and possiblea couple of sittings, surely not after 1910 (according to photos).
The fringe tiara was made in 1919 using stones from the tiara/necklace that Queen Victoria gave Princess Mary as a wedding present. The palmette tiara was, if I remeber correctly, created in 1914, so it fits.
But I do remeber reading somewhere (here, RJWMB, TheRoyalForums) that the stones from the loop tiara were later used for the Delhi Durbar diademe. This, however, was long ago, so I may have mixed some facts.

That sounds quite interesting, Alexander! So apart from a royal jewllery collection you also have a collection of royal clothes... Interesting!

Have you ever lent a tiara or two to a bride/s? (I'm sorry, I know I'm too curious!)

BTW, I found this site with nice copies of some royal tiaras - http://www.hellotrade.com/juliette-designs/product.html
They also have the aquamarine kokoshnik. Maybe Maria can take a look and chose one from there :)

that's true the Dehli was also made in 1911. so I think QM was very "productive" in those years. by the way I for me the Loop is really ugly. but of cousrse, if someone give it to me, I would'nt say no

Now I hope you'll win even more so than before, Maria!!! I really hope we'll get to see a nice copy of a royal tiara from your collection in due tiame!

If I were you, I'd be careful with the second site! There must be something "dark" about it. I mean they don't show a singe photo of a replica they offer. All these photos are to be found on WebShots... And I really, really doubt the offer an exact copy (let alone the original) of Empress Josefine's Coronation diademe for just US$82.99...

The "emerald" tiara from the first link looks nce, though, and the original has always been among my favs :) The price also sounds reasonable.

Bobby

Call me crazy, but I'd turn down the offer. The only reason why I'd accept it is to break it and use the stones for something prettier. I also find it quite ugly, maybe even the uglies of Queen Mary's tiaras.

The President of Chilie and the First Lady are ona State Visit to Spain. Tonight there was a State Banquet at which the Queen wore the floral tiara, one of her ruby and diamond necklaces and earrings and a FdL brooch. The Princess is wearing/wore the Prussian tiara & a brooch with a dress I'd never wear at such event, unless I'm in deep miurning (and if I were a lass).

ETA - The Queen also wore Queen Ena's diamond bracelets. Leti's hairdo remindes me of what Queen Rania wore at Victoria's wedding last summer.
Here one can see other photos and also the beautiful dress and hair of the Chilian First Lady (some people can lear a lot from her!) - http://megagalerias.terra.cl/galerias/actualidad/galeria.cfm?id_galeria=57337

that's funny, of course they have..or better I have... it's the same company. they realy have golden hands. - some of the designs came from my proposal to make such a design.

until now I never lent something. you're not curious.
now I'm just wondering why it never came in my mind that I could lent someone a piece or make an exhibition. As I'm interessted so long in the jewel stuff and discussing it in some forums I never thought, look here the piece in question is in my vault - and other as the real thing you can touch it LOL

a collection of dresses I wouln't it call, it should be 6 or 7 designs.

Women may have held on but she still lacks in looks and class

Still that's interesting, even if it's not a large collection of outfits. Organising an exhibition sounds quite interesting! I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd like to see some nice frocks and jewels, even if they're not particularly interested in royalty :) (I'd surely visit if I have the chance)
About lending jewels - You should really start doing it. Be it for weddings, fancy dress parties or something else. I'm sure the happy women will appreciate it. The final decision is yours, of course.

of course the prieces are a bit higher, but the quality is fantastic, and it's not such a (chinese) muss production.

May I ask how much a nice copy of a tiara would cost? Obviously there are nice copies for 50-80 USD, but none of the sites that offer your tiaras has the prices listed.
And in what metal are they set? Is real metal (gold, silver) used, or are they only plated?

I think the "under metal" is copper or such thing, the golden ones are gold plated the others plated with rhodium. the pieces with the cz stones set in real silver.

as I said before thats more the dircetion of some , sorry, cheap chinese mass production (stones, setting, the complete "outfit"). I know that than I also have some of that (like from Marias first site the Hepburn one) but this here is a real other level.
I will said it with the words of the Queen Mother " We do not speak about money."

one of HM's finest jewels came back to light.
the Cullinan V heart brooch

from the RC web site
The Cullinan V brooch

Probably Garrards

The unusual heart-shaped stone of 18.8 carats, given by the Government of South Africa to Queen Mary in 1910, is one of the nine numbered Cullinan diamonds. In its diamond and platinum setting, it was designed both as a brooch and as the detachable centre of the emerald and diamond stomacher made for the Delhi Durbar in 1911. For the 1937 coronation, Queen Mary used this brooch in her coronet in the place of the Koh-i-Nûr, which had been transferred to Queen Elizabeth’s crown. It was bequeathed to The Queen by Queen Mary in 1953.

Thank you very much for the reply about tiaras, Alexander! So very kind of you to answer my questions!
Do you know on what occasion Queen Elizabeth said the she doesn't talk about money?

That's a nice photo of Elizabeth II with the Cullinan V brooch.

Re: The Diamond Safety Pin

I have looked at this photo of the Princess wearing the safety pin for two days thinking that my opinion of it might change. It hasn't. Sometimes a piece can come across as amusing but this one falls flat with me. Actually, for the occasion it is being worn at, I think it borders on ill chosen. More suitable to a lapel of a suit or on a sweater...something more casual in style. All together the outfit that the Princess chose is not up to her usual standard of style. I always enjoy seeing what she is wearing, and truly envy her slim figure which shows her clothes off to wonderful advantage.
