Hi, I''m new to the forum, but have followed this forum a while. All you posts and messages have been so helpful in my gemstone and diamond education!

My situation is: I''m thinking about getting a pair of ruby studs in yellow gold setting/backing. I was quoted around $900 for 1.33 tcw, 5 mm in diameter. To my naked eye, it''s a nice red crimson, sparkles under light. With the loupe, it seems to me that there are inclusions, but the sparkle would imply a pretty good cut to me...relative newbie at this though.

What do you guys think about the quote? Is this about what I should expect? The ruby comes out to be about $677/ct, however the pink sapphires I recently got were $850/ct. Should I infer that the price different is due to quality of stone (these two are from two different stores and I''m pretty sure the pink sapphires were pretty close to wholesale price)?

Thanks for any advice or comments you can give!

With gemstones, pricing can be all over the place depending upon the colour, mostly. Without even a picture, I have no idea with what you are offered is expensive, reasonable or cheap. I presume the ruby has been gently heat treated. How clean is the stone? Can you see through the stone or is it opaque? How well matched is the pair? How pure is the red colour? There are just too many variables for me to guess what you should be paying.
