My wife and I are looking for a 3 stone ruby ring for our 25th anniversary. She like a dark red ruby that sparkles. We are looking for about a 2 carat stone around the 4K range.

She likes the look of the ring, bout would like a darker stone. Similar to the ones that I circled in the second picture.

With all of that being said, what do you all think about the stone pictured from Gemfix?

Sorry, I can't get a direct link for that stone.

I would let your wife pick the color of the ruby, and perhaps you can surprise her with the ring itself.

The ruby you picked has a lot of brown to it, which is not considered trade ideal. However, if this is the color your wife likes, I think you should consider it. It does have more brown than the rubies you have circled. I think it is priced to reflect its color.

Preg,

Thanks, you are right it does look like it has brown in it now that you mention it.

Also, the rubies that your wife picked out look like they have extinction from poor cutting. There are the "dead" spots you see that look black. In general, if you want a deep color, it should be more uniform.

Here's one that is darker red, but still has good color

Dont mistake ''dark'' meaning of tone for saturation, a vivid pidgeon red ruby at 2ct is not going to cost 4000 which is the color I think in the photos your wife likes. Over dark rubies are not even close in beauty or value so don't get the two mixed up

I am confused by the terminology you used, especially when comparing it to the rubies that your wife likes. "Dark" references tone, which describes the brightness level of stones. Dark stones tend to have very little sparkle. The lighter the tone, the more sparkle one will get if cut the same. Darkness in a stone sometimes happen from poor cutting as well. Blood red tends to be medium to medium dark in tone with very rich saturation (or pop of colour). $4K is too low for a blood red ruby but is reasonable for a darker browner ruby.

Sorry all, we are rookies at this and are learning. Basically my wife would like a nice red stone that sparkles. The one thing she said is "no pink". I am still trying to learn all the the correct terminology. I have been reading on this site for about 2 months now and still have more to go.

The good new is that the budget does seem to be increasing and the stone size could be decreasing. Maybe looking about 1.5 carats now. I know she does not want a round ring, something oval cut.

So does anyone know of any nice red rubies that sparkle in the 1.5 carat range?

Preg, that second one you posted has a nice look to it, it is just the wrong shape.

She did decide on the ring. We found it at the Angara website, not sure how they are. Her ring is kind of curvy like the ruby ring and mine kind of matches it as well. So this ring kind of fits in with both of our wedding rings.
