I have an emerald pear one its way, just over 3 carats.

I want to bezel it in 22k yellow gold but I want to put some smaller stones above the emerald in the pendant.

I would love your ideas about how to set the emerald, and any ideas on how to pair it with any other gemstones?

I'm loving the colour combinations in these earrings by Featherstone but I can't quite translate it for an emerald (mine is a medium green)

I know you are all fantastic at colour combos and your collective wisdom is much appreciated!

Best emeralds I have seen were not bezeled, but perhaps Scott Schreiber could be a good choice for such a work? I have seen his bezelwork, it seems amazing... Possible color combos could be orange (Mexican opal melee if you can find one), pink (small spinels), or demantoid/diamond melee...

I'm worried about protecting the stone, hence thought of a bezel.

Thanks for your suggestions crasru! :wavey:

Ooh, pics of the emerald? I'll pretend it will help me with color combination suggestions, but really, I just want to ogle your stone! :naughty:

I haven't got it yet but will sure post pics once I do. I don't like to post vendor pics when it's in transit in case it gets lost :cheeky:

Emeralds need reoiling every so often, so if it's not filled with a permanent stable filler like opticon, I would not bezel it, as it would have to be removed for periodic filling. Also due to all the cracks on the surface of an emerald, bezeling them isn't a good idea. They could cause the cracks to grow, and/or put stress on the filler in the cracks, making the cracks more evident.

Canuk-gal, you are surprizing me today! The cross looks as if it came straight from a museum! Seriously! Does it have a thread? It is a fantastic piece! Not that your other jewelry is lacking in beauty, but I almost fainted when I saw this cross on my monitor! Did any of old European museums have a sale? :D

Sharon, I have died and gone to emerald heaven. Your pieces are EXQUISITE.

What do you all think of pairing an amy with the emerald, in 22k yellow gold (you've convinced me not to bezel it!)

I'm pretty much just looking at interesting color combos, here are a few:

I agree, I'm thinking of doing something similar with several emeralds I own. What karat gold is that? Absolutely gorgeous cross!!

I think emeralds look best in at least 18K, and that is such a rich buttery color on the cross, very good workmanship too. Normally I advise against bezeling emeralds, but sometimes a very good goldsmith can do it. I do remember a bezeled emerald ring that was the center of a large court case against the jeweler. The stone in this case was rather large, and a lady knocked it against a surface, and the stone formed a crack, which I don't think would have been as evident if it had been prong set instead. It was filled with resin that became "loosened" in the crack it was hiding after it was knocked on some surface. Therefore, the stone formed a huge crack.

Here's more on the case that involved this emerald.

In rather small emeralds, it might not be as evident if you bezel, but for a three carat emerald, I would be concerned.

Rosetta, I'll see what I can come up with for designs for you--but I know when I want inspiration (or usually just a good drool), I go to First Dibs and look at the jewellery.

cheers--Sharon

Oh honey, you can threadjack me anytime if it means eye candy like that. SWOON

I'm just looking for a stone that looks nice with an emerald. Could swing a small OEC maybe....plotting.....

Thank you for your suggestions chel180. If my stone was lighter, I would pair it with an aqua for sure.

I recently asked a bunch of people on this board if various stones would look good with my emerald. Because of the way emeralds glow, and have a satin sheen to them, not many gemstones look good with them. I think people are right, and emeralds are such refined gems, they probably only look best with diamonds, or fancy yellow diamonds (if you can swing it). :naughty:

That ring of Kaleigh's is to die for!

I have a 3ct pear cut emerald that I have in a sort of solid metal halo/diamond halo that protects it. I've also got an emerald cut Emerald that is semi-bezelled but I have to say that I prefer them to be claw set for all the reasons TL has mentioned.

Although I've not teamed my Emeralds with other colour stones, I once saw a pendant with diamond accents that I fell in love with totally! It had a princess cut with points north and south and then underneath it and one on each side, a marquise cut diamond. It gave the effect of a flower and was just exquisite.

You have no idea how hard I'm working to picture this pendant LD.

I just can't picture it. How many marquises are there? Which way are they pointing?

Do you have a pic?

Oh please, it's driving me crazy!

Ok - this is a really bad mock up! Imagine your pear hanging down under it. Honestly I've seen the real thing and it was absolutely stunning!

You could do this with blue sapphires, pink mahenges, purple sapphires ...................

I like this!!

This is what it looks like with a pear ............

Ok here's the plan.

I'm going to see if any of my existing stones go with the emerald. If not, I'm going to save up for the diamonds. I love this design (it would totally work for my blue zircon as well....)

Did you get this gorgeous pear set? Would love to see!!

I am learning so much from the links in this thread :read: Thank you!

For the setting, I think you could use the same colors as shown in the earrings, but match the saturation and tone with your emerald. For example, I am assuming that your emerald has a more saturated and darker green than the opal. If that is the case, I would chose tanzanites that have a more vivid purple and match in tone/saturation to the emerald. For the blue stones, I would just pick emeralds that match your 3 ct emerald in color.
