1639901951176.jpegMy goldsmith is a very nice and talented person. I showed him some rings I like and he 3D printed some models for me. I chose a classic design with long and flat prongs (less prone to damage and I also like the look).

Originally I wanted Platinum 950 for the setting, but the price was about 2800€/3140$. Its a solid design and would be quite heavy (30g+). That’s the reason I chose Silver 925, which is much cheaper (~600€/647$).

This is the 3D model with my stone:

Im really looking forward to the finished piece, I‘ll get it before Christmas

Have a nice day,
Simon

What a beautiful sapphire. It’s going to look great in that setting and I can’t wait to see the finished pics.

What a gorgeous gem. I love platinum, but silver is great too. A 30g ring would ache after a short while. I have a 20g platinum ring, and you do get finger aches. Silver is much lighter and definitely cost effective. I hope it’s a non tarnish alloy.

Please post photos when it’s done.

I can’t wait to see it! Looks gorgeous.

I love the stone and the ring design. I love the heft of a heavy ring -- I think my ring is 25 grams and it's easy to wear. Do not be afraid of a heavy ring.

One design note: make a bigger opening at the back to facilitate cleaning. (But it's hard for me to judge scale.) This is not like a prong set -- if you wash your hands, it will stay wet back there for hours. You will need excellent access for cleaning -- and you will need to clean it often. My guy undermines it a little so the hole is bigger closest to the stone. This would not be the case for a cab but is key for a brilliant faceted stone.

I know next to nothing about non-gold, non-Pt alloys so I do not know how silver would perform. There are lots of ways to save weight on it, even if it were all Pt. Seems odd to me that the mark-up is so much lower for silver (i.e., even factoring in the cost of the metal); the ring looks hand-carved.

Hey,

I will ask my goldsmith about the cleaning aspect, thank you for the hint.

My goldsmith will of course use a high quality silver alloy, he only crafts quality work. Even the best silver alloy doesn’t cost much, because it easy and cheap to produce.

Platinum is much denser than silver, so more than twice the amount of material is needed.
I also was a bit shocked about the price.
The 950 PT alloy is MUCH more expensive than the raw material. I asked some German goldsmiths in a forum about this and they explained it to me. You can’t get 1 ounce 950 platinum alloy for the spot price of raw platinum (~940$). It costs more than twice the amount, at least in Germany. It contains expensive palladium and the production process is expensive, too.

We also discussed the option to use less material and make it lighter, but the stone ia pretty high with 4.4mm and the material-savings would not be much (couple hundred dollars, still out of my budget).

Thank you very much again,

Simon

It’s finished and I love it. Sadly we have to make it a bit tighter, because my fingers got thinner (diet).
The hole in the back is big enough for easy cleaning with a soft toothbrush.
Its made in 935 silver (stamped 925 for legal reasons). I wore it a few days and it hasn’t any tarnishing issues yet.
Im really happy with my design choice and the 4 prongs give the classic design a modern touch.
In the final setting, the stone got a little bit darker and the Colour is now a bit more maculine :)

Have a nice Christmas,

I really like your ring! That's a great design. I like the semi-bezel look with the dome ring. Usually they are fully bezeled, so it's nice to see a different style :)

It came out really nice!! Question, is it rhodium plated, or is that the actual color of the silver? Just curious. Thanks!

By the way, since you mentioned it, tarnishing won’t happen overnight, it can sometimes take a while, especially if it’s plated. You might want to get some anti tarnish paper to put in its box with it. Besides, tarnish is easy enough to clean on such a smooth ring with no intricate surfaces.

Congrats on your beautiful new ring!

Hey,

thank you all:)

The ring is not rhodium plated;)
If it becomes a bit blackish or yellowish, I‘ll try out the aluminium, salt and hot water thing on this one. That worked pretty well in my other pieces with no sensitive gems.
I’ll definetely store it with such a paper, thanks.

Just get polishing cloth. They make them to remove tarnish.

It turned out beautifully  The sapphire color just pops. I love the silver.
A swipe with a sunshine cloth every once in a while will keep it shining.

i love your ring
the colour of that saphire is sooooo pretty and i love the setting

i dont see ternish being a problem as silver likes to be worn and won't tarnish while its on your finger

where we live silver tarnishes quickly i think due to the proximity of volcanoes ???

but only when things are sitting around unworn

a ring like that wants to be worn a lot !
