Setting question—non standard sizes

What do you do if your stone is a non-standard size, like 7.3 mm x 6.3 mm? Do you go straight to a custom setting, or do you think my local jeweler could alter a stock Stuller type setting? I wanted to go with a fairly simple design for this one.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Ive asked my jewellers to alter readymade settings a lot and they do it for free! I had one ring that was made from a round setting to a trillion back to round :oops2: (attached)

But you do have to be careful I think if you want a really clean job and not just something you will do. This was a simple ring with nothing but a standard prong mount so perhaps easy to ‘edit’

Btw that is a heck of a gem!!! Congratulations and do share finished pics! Generally for special stones I tend to get custom made stuff but it really depends on how affordable it is.

Thank you, Gemobsessed! I love how your ring came out! :appl:

Thanks so much but honestly the prongs were not set too accurately. I’ve now removed the stone for repolishing and will get it set properly.

My point was that the ring itself needs to be easy to remold. You should consider ivyandrose vintage. They however do charge to redo the mold and set the stone but overall they are more affordable. But at least they are open to remolding

If your local jeweller is apprehensive about it they are a good option.

I have bought many settings from them (use to be mydiamondzone) and most of their settings if you look in their listings will give a little bit of a range of what size stone will fit, so if the listing says for 5mm it might say range 4.8-5.2mm. They will also altar which they call custom, and my new jadeiete ring was almost going to be but it wound up fitting. I think they were going to charge me an extra $150 plus the actual cost for the setting for custom if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the ideas, y’all!
