SO! There is a gown I like-- by a designer whose gowns I've tried on-- but after trying on dresses by that designer-- which were priced at around 2700 at the shop I was at. I was discouraged because my second choice gown was around 1200 (through RK) and was honestly just as nice. BUT it occured to me that I should call around for prices on the gown I liked-- but hadn't tried on-- to see what the best price was before I went to another shop and tried it on. Here's what happened.
Bridal shop one:
Woman kept forgetting what designer I wanted, and couldn't seem to understand that she could get me a price for the gown by calling the designer-- whose line they carry. She kept telling me to come on in. Even though she doesn't have that gown in her stock. And assuring me that she can get me a price-- IF I come in. Uh huh. Complete waste of time.
Bridal shop two:
Even though the designer was not listed on Pearl's site I thought I'd call. The woman says, "No we don't carry them. I think DAVID'S does." And she said David's like it was mud. I assured her that it wasn't carried by Davids and she says, "Are you sure? Cause WE don't carry them." LMAO. Whatever.
Bridal Shop number three:
Woman was very nice. 2100 was their best price. So I asked about alterations and what not. Very reasonable 50 bucks for a bustle. Located in Maryland. Woman told me how much the gowns were supposed to retail for and how much the designer charges for pattern changes-- 250. The shop where I had tried the gown on??? They qouted me 475 for a pattern change. So clearly there is no way in hell I'll be ordering from them.
Bridal shop number four.
While I was fairly happy with shop #3... I wanted to call one other place and check. So I thought... things are frequently more reasonably priced in the South and in Texas. SO I called TX. 1800 bucks. No tax. Cheap shipping. Lovely service.
Which makes this gown here... just 600 bucks more expensive than the Paloma. I will now be making an appointment to try it on. YAY!
Moral? If you don't mind dealing with a separate seamstress for alterations... even if RK and Pearls don't have your designer. Call around.
ETA: Here's the gown.
