For my 16th bday, my stepdad and my mom (I will always think of him as my dad, he raised me from when I was 3 until he passed when I was 23) gave me my mom''s engagement ring (she received an upgrade). It has been sitting in a safe place since then and just recently it occured to me that we should use this diamond and have it reset. My mom is getting it out of the safe deposit box tomorrow to have it appraised. I think it''s pretty small but reset in a nice setting it could be perfect.

Does anyone think this is weird?

If it has no sentimental value ''as is'' to your mom; and she doesn''t care; go ahead.

I say go for it.. no sense spending thousands on a new diamond when you have one sitting in a safety deposit box... also, it will always have sentimental value to you and your family. i think it''s a great idea! i wish we had a diamond we could have used!!

They actually gave it to me for Xmas (before my dad passed away). It''s stilll in my mom''s very simple setting in yellow gold. I would want white gold or platinum. So, technically it''s mine to do with it as I wish.

I guess I am more concerned that it would be weird to offer it to my BF? We really do not have much money to spend on a ring and this would be a great way to save and also to get a really decent setting.

That''s exactly what I''m doing, so I don''t think it''s a big deal. You get a diamond with heirloom value, save your BF some money, and get a gorgeous setting.

Sounds win-win-(win?) to me!

Ditto! I''d maybe ask him about it first, but that''s a great idea.

I love the idea! You take an event (engagement) and a symbol (E-ring) and make them even more special by using a diamond that already has sentimental value!

I think it''s a lovely idea to use your mom''s old ering stone and get in re set in a setting you adore...It is a stone that has sentimental meaning to you and that''s very special, nothing weird about it.

Thanks for the feedback! I just didn''t want to feel like I was stepping on my BF''s toes.

I am excited to find out more about the ring, I haven''t seen it in ages. My heart has been set on a cushion but I think in this setting I could have a winner!

Ooooohhh! That setting is amazing!

As long as your BF is okay with using the stone then I see nothing wrong with it.

Very pretty setting. I think it gives the round brilliant a "cushion" feel.

Gorgeous setting, what a great way to make a round appear to have a cushion shape. I think the idea is so sweet, as long as your FF is ok with it. I am so sorry you lost your father at such a vital age, but what a great way to keep his memory and the love your parents had for eachother close to you every day. I think that is so special!

My mom is going to get it out of the safe deposit box today and is bringing it to the jeweler. I have NO idea what kind of the shape the ring is in. I am anxious to find out.

I LOVE the Leon design posted above, it will help give me the appearance of the cushion with the round diamond. I posted about that ring on the forums before, does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions on where to get it custom made? I have emailed Leon asking for a quote and I am waiting to hear back. From what I have read before, it might be around $5,000 for just the setting. That is a little too steep for us, looking at about $2,000.

Thanks for all your input!!

Two things:

1) I didn't catch whether you've asked your bf his feelings on the matter. If he doesn't care, then I think it's a great idea. But I would definitely carefully broach it with him first

2) I'm pretty sure that people on here have said that Leon does not like to work with "small" diamonds, by which I think he means less than a carat, but maybe even less than 1.5? (I say that as the proud owner of a .7ct) so don't get your hopes up! I know the ring you linked to has a .65, but from what I've heard, he doesn't necessarily take commissions like that. Let us know what he says.

Re: number 2, Delster's stone is a 1.37ct and was set by Leon, for what that's worth.

I will let you know what he says!

I did talk to my SO about it and he was game. We are waiting to see what my mom says about the ring in question.

I know I want a halo and micro pave. I just loved this Leon design as it would still give me the appearance of a cushion.

He wants to go shopping next time we are in LA (which will be in August) so it appears the ball is rolling!!!

I am doing the same thing! although, i am keeping the setting of the Ering and *hopefully* getting a new wedding band.

congrats!

I just got off the phone with my mom. She can''t find the ring...she swore it was in the safe deposit box but now she can''t find it. She tore apart everything at home, I can tell she is upset. I am upset. It has to be there...somewhere. Odd too because my mom is probably the most organized person in the world, her nickname is the "Machine".

Oh my! i hope she finds it! maybe at a different bank?

regardless of the outcome, i still wish the best!

I have no idea, it has been put away for so long now (about 10 years). She has since moved houses as well. I can''t believe I finally came to the realization to use the ring, talk about it with my SO and now the ring is MIA. So weird....I remember seeing it not that long ago after my grandmother passed. We were going through all of our family jewelry and it was there then (my mom had it at the house and was returning everything to the safe deposit box). I think she just needs to step back and think of where it might be. Granted, my mom is truly organized and neat but has been known to put things in random places. I have found some things in pretty random places...phone in the freezer?

Fingers crossed it turns up

Oh no! I''m sure it will turn up, I just hope sooner than later!

You should also look into having a reputable jeweler create a replica of the Leon setting for you, just in case it is too pricey!
