Recently I was able to acquire a lovely and clean 7.62ct. alluvial color change spinel. It has some small inclusions close to the surface, otherwise its completely clean. As the deposit for those skyblue spinels up in the mountain at the Bai Son mine in Luc Yen is dry out since few years only very rarely some pieces came out of a small alluvial deposit at the bottom of the Bai Son mountain. Most probably there will be not many more of them in the future. So what you would do with it?

What shape will maximize the weight of the finished stone?

Just for maximum weight would be kind of a irregular shape. A square cushion would match well to the rough to.

I voted cab.

Antique square cushion is my favourite shape, the one with the Asscher cut pavilion.

Thats indeed a very nice cut!

I don’t see the “sell it to me” option .... :D
I’d say cab, but that’s my favorite, or max the size in a precision cut or near- pprecision cut

I voted to leave it as is. That’s assuming it is for your collection and you don’t plan to set it. I think it’s beauty in the natural state and the rarity of it makes it an amazing collectors stone.

I'd show it to a trusted lapidary to evaluate it for faceting. My preference is usually precision cutting. But I'd be curious to have them judge expected weight or issues that may arise.

Thanks everybody for their opinion! Will take my time to think about and see were it goes with it. The good thing with gems is that they not run away or rotten after a while or so:-)
