Since there will be alot of company parties and things like that around that time, how far in advance do you think we should book the reception site? (We''re thinking Dec 22 2007 (sat) b/c FI will be in grad school and we both wanted to have a winter wedding)

Did your man propose Sweetpea?

Sorry.. double post!

I don''t know what part of the country you''re in.. but even though there will be a lot of company parties, you''ll still have a lot easier time with a winter wedding than in the "peak season".. at least where I am from.Because if you think about it.. Companies don''t book their parties until a few months ahead..

I noticed though.. especially this year, with new years eve falling on a saturday that EEEEEVVVERYONE was having New Years Eve weddings.. And I think ones right before christmas are pretty popular too.. Not like summer time weddings though!

I''m sure you still have PLENTY of time to book.. I''m sure you''ll be fine even less than a year out.. but.. i would probably start looking, maybe this summer? No rush of course though.. I booked my place 15 months ahead I think.. for a memorial day weekend wedding.. and I was running into places getting booked.. but I''m sure in the winter it is MUCH less busy..

I used to work at a country club and people would book their Christmas parties AT LEAST a year in advance. I''m not sure where you''re located, but if it''s a bigger city than Pensacola, I would recommend you book a minimum of 1 year in advance. It''s always better to book really early and cancel later if you find a better place than to wait too long and have no place at all (you''ll get your deposit back if you cancel far enough before the wedding).

I''m from boston, so I can see this possibly being an issue...I dont want to have the reception in the city, but I''m sure suburbs may book up too...my mom says she''d like to have the place booked and deposit down a year and a half in advance. I''m thinking it may be a good idea...

Sweetie you need to book that sucker now! Don''t wait if you know your date. December is a SUPER hard month to get a good site because of all the parties and such. I am the catering manager for the largest hotel in Atlanta and know what I''m talking about!

I agree that you need to book well in advance. But also be prepared to have very little negotiating room if you pick that busy time of year. I wanted to have my wedding on December 3 this past year and the place was already getting booked up with holiday parties (they have many rooms for events). While they did have the space available that I wanted, I didn''t want to be one of many parties on that night and there was absolutely no wiggle room for me to negotiate the price as they knew they could get exactly what they wanted at that time of year. We ended up going with February instead so we still get the winter wedding but it''s a really off month so we were able to negotiate quite a bit.

Saturday evening wedding in late December? Book it this month, especially if you're having a large wedding! And consider that Sunday evenings will be more open in December than Fri and Sat - my girlfriend had her pick of reception halls in town for her December 11 wedding (only a 3 month engagement!!), but our church couldn't find anything for the college group Christmas formal when they started looking for locations in early October (looking at Fri and Sat nights) and had to cancel it for the first time in years.

thanks all for the advice!

So, book now even though the wedding isnt for 23 months? My mom and I were thinking that we''d book by the summertime (a year and a half in advance). We dont have a church that we go to, so I really dont have too much preference on that, although we''ll prob book that right after we book the reception.

She is talking December 07, correct?? That is two years away.. I don''t think you really need to book this month..

I was thinking I''d book by the summertime (july at latest)...the most important things to get a handle on then will be the reception and church I think. Then a year in advance I''ll try to book the open bar and the music, although I''m not sure how far in advance those book...hopefully that''s a decent timeline

I think you''re ok with that time frame. I wouldn''t do it any later than that though.

I am planning a May 2007 wedding and I plan to have my ceremony/reception site booked at the end of this month. Better sooner than later....don''t want to loose the date. So, Sweatpea, I''d book ASAP so that you can get the date you want. Have you inquired to any reception sites?
