Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so hello and hope you are well and healthy.

I've been quoted approx £1,580 for the below ring. heres the info:

  1. Diamond spec below
  2. image of diamond below
  3. Image of ring attached in platinum
  4. shoulder stones are in same colour and clarity, and total 0.2 ct (they dont have a gia cert)

That is not what we would consider a well cut stone, so I would not purchase it.

When considering round brilliant stones, stick with the following:
Depth: 60-62.4
Table: 54-58
Crown angle: 34-35. Sometimes 35.5 is ok with pavillion of 40.6
Pavillion: 40.6 - 40.8. Sometimes 41 is ok with crown angle of 34

Thanks Lovedogs - excuse my ignorance as I'm new, but the spec of my stone meets your advice above?

I dont think the crown and pavillion angles work well together. I only see the crown percentage and dont know the formula for converting it to angle, but from the picture the stone doesnt look great, and the GIA "very good " rating is a very bad sign. The specs I gave assume you are looking at GIA EX EX EX, whereas this one is VG VG VG.

Thanks lovedogs - some further questions if I may?
- where do you set the stone value for above at?

I wouldn't buy it for pretty much any price because cut is so critical for diamonds to sparkle. But looking at comps with similar specs I would say no more than 1K USD, preferably less (1K USD is 716 in pounds sterling). You'll mostly be paying for the setting here since Platinum is expensive. When I looked online, a setting that appears pretty much identical to yours (with .2 diamond side stones, plat, etc) runs approx 1900 USD (1418 in pounds sterling).

Overall I don't think you are overpaying compared to equivalent options, but again it's not something I would choose because the center stone isn't great.

OP, I had a quick look at Blue Nile, which I think is a good option for U.K. buyers on a budget who don’t want to deal with US purchases. Here’s an example of a better cut stone and a setting, just to show you the relative pricing.

It always seems to me that it is not a good idea to buy a ring where the setting is worth more than the diamond, after all, the stone is the sparkly bit! Would you consider a plain setting in gold (might be £500 or so) and spend the rest on getting a bigger diamond?? Please note also that you could probably safely go to an H colour and VS2/Si1 clarity at this size.

The stone here is SO MUCH BETTER! And I second the idea that buying a ring where the setting is the expensive part doesn't really make sense
