Somebody's Gotta Buy This Piece!

@archaeopteryx - My 2 cents is that I was with you, with you and then you lost me at the 9mm face up with a good cut for 10k. You’re willing to sacrifice on a lot, which is great for your budget, but that is really tight. A couple of thoughts — I know you want a large stone, and large face up, but you’re going to have to have a shallower stone to get there and the cut will be sacrificed to get that much of a face up. Cut in older stones is subjective. But I’d caution you on making a similar mistake to your first ring where you’re disappointed with the cut in the long run. If you were happier closer to 8mm I think it would be totally doable. Especially if you had a bezel or halo setting. I’d also suggest you get some really well cut CZs or moissanites in an OEC pattern at 2 carats / 8mm and see if you can live with the size for a more lively cut and color. I thought I needed a 4ct/9mm sapphire, but ended up thrilled with a 2.4ct 7mm (yes, 7mm) in a diamond halo because the sapphire was/is just that pretty and knocked the larger, uglier (sorry) stones out of the park.

Having said that, I’ll be darned what I found at Ivy and Rose. Would def request a video: https://ivyandrose.com/products/2-5...t-diamond-o-p-vs2-loose-vintage-natural-2-5ct

that’s super pretty! I do recommend starting a new thread @archaeopteryx so people can help you look. I would put it in Rocky Talky

This is such a dangerous thread ..... keep posting, everyone!!!

@archaeopteryx … you can find what you are looking for, but it’s going to take two things.

#1: Patience
#2: Auction

It’s going to take a while, and a lot of looking. You won’t find a beautifully cut stone, at that size, color and price through a reseller… but, if take your time, educate yourself and train your eye to spot a quality stone, you can cut out the middle man by watching auctions- you’ll find your stone. Watch for pendants, brooches, loose stones… they tend to go for less than rings.

When Covid hit, a lot of people panicked and listed anything of value, jewelry being one of them. I watched a ton of beautiful pieces, sell for half than the should have. One in particular I would have bought in a heart beat if I had the funds… a to die for 6.5ct I/SI1 oec in its original Edwardian setting. Sold for $96k. Grace later sold it for close to $200k. With the market right now, you may get lucky… most auction pieces, the bigger 4-6ct’s tend to be warmer, and the less than 4ct you can find higher colors, you just have to dig. Ask for pics and lots of videos. Be specific how you want the videos taken so you can analyze the cut… 99.9% of the time the videos that come back are hilarious- so be very specific. Facing a window downing the day, close up with a loupe, slow movement. If it’s not GIA cert, make sure you add 3-4 colors of warmth - if you can, see it in person. Auctions are non returns, so you need to know what you are looking at.

I’m heartbroken and hope the amazing sleuths here can help! I’ve lost my platinum Singlestone wedding band! It’s the perfect match for Bertie, but I can’t afford Singlestone prices these days! If you come across this in anything from a 5.25 to 6 (platinum) I’d be so grateful! IMG_8571.jpegIMG_5445.jpeg

Oh darn-I have one saved but it's way to big for you. I'll keep my eye out.

ETA: does it have to be platinum? If not, message me on IG-I have a lead for you.

Lulu is the best, isn’t she?!? :kiss2:

OMG, yes!! She’s amazing! Talented at sniffing things out and a heart of gold for being willing to help!! I have the returnable white gold version on its way to me to see if patina wise it’s ok with Bertie’s. Lulu was gracious enough to keep her eye out for the platinum version!

Yay! That was fast!

I hope it works out for you! I pair my platinum ring with an 18k band and it works!

Are you concerned that as the rhodium wears off it will appear yellow tinted and if you replate it, it will be too shiny next to platinum? That’s my worry…

Not really… I’ll cross that bridge if/when I get there… I think if that happens, I’ll throw a solid yellow gold band in between the two.

Side note…. I LOVE your setting!!!

They didn’t rhodium plate anything back then! Antique 18k is unplated.

Aww, thanks! I’ve followed your story and am speechless at your amazing journey and the museum worthy outcome! Your set is breathtaking and tremendously sentimental!! ❤️

The ring I bought is 14k wg, so likely plated. However, at under $750 (shipped) and returnable, definitely worth a look!!
