We''re meeting with our DJ this weekend. I want him to play lots of fun dance songs and I just wanted to hear everyone''s suggestions for that! What dancing songs are on your "Must Play" list? Here are some of the ones we want to put on ours:

I Feel Good-James Brown
Love Shack-B52s (classic wedding reception song, haha!)
Shout-Otis Day
Build me Up Buttercup-Foundations
Shout-Isley Brothers
Time of Your Life-Bill Medly (from Dirty Dancing)
SexyBack-Justin Timberlake
Hey Ya-Outkast
Just Dance-Lady Gaga
Crazy in Love-Beyonce
Boom Boom Pow-Black Eyed Peas

I don''t have any!!

All I care about is my do-not play list: No gangsta/ghetto rap (sorry, I just don''t dig it... but some hip hop is okay); nothing that was on a top-20 chart for the past year (because I don''t know of any popular music); no country unless requested by a guest; and NO CHICKEN DANCE OR POLKA MUSIC!

I''m all for the oldies-but-goodies; many that you listed, and some others. Even the electric slide is okay. 80''s-90''s-EARLY 2000''s hip-hip and pop hits are A-okay as well. FI and I listen to all indie rock which isn''t always the best for dancing, and most people don''t like it/haven''t ever heard it. So I won''t force guests to listen to My Morning Jacket or Blitzen Trapper.

My "Golden Rule": Unless it''s a special request by someone near and dear to my heart, all dance music (or all music, really) must be something I HAVE HEARD BEFORE. And I''d bet $100 that if it is pop/hip-hip/country and made sometime after 2007, I probably won''t know it.

I wanted to link to this thread of mine because the amazing tlh put together a rocking song list for me that served as the foundation for our playlist (which we are still tweaking). It was very helpful!

As for the songs that will always get me dancing:

"Land of 1000 Dances" Wilson Pickett (my favorite dance song EVER!)
"Superstition" Stevie Wonder
"Respect" Aretha Franklin
"Sex Machine" James Brown
"Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" Michael Jackson

I also think you can't go wrong with songs that were popular when the majority of your guests were in high school or college. Get them remembering their wild and crazy days, and they will shake it!

ETA: lol. I just realized that none of my suggested songs are from when I was in college or HS, despite my "advice". I am old, but not that old

We had a list prepared for our DJ, but it was more to give him an idea of our taste in music than anything else. We''re going to trust him to read the crowd. He said he was impressed with it - that all the songs were the kind that made people say, "Oh! I love that song!" But obviously, taste in music is very personal. :) The only "must" play dance music we requested was a current Korean pop song or two (I don''t speak, but I thought my parents might get a kick out of it).
