I just ordered this stone from www.rainbowofgems.com I''ve never seen an ametrine like this IRL, so I''m anxious to get it.

I''ve purchased several stones from this seller in the past, but he is just starting to populate his website with some new stones so I thought I''d share this one. He told me that he has more coming in the next few weeks. I just received a fanta orange spess from him that is really pretty and I''ll try to get some "real life" shots of it.

As a way of getting the word out about his website, he told me that he would give a 5% refund, via paypal, to anyone who tells him they heard about his website on Pricescope. Just email him before or after you buy the stone and tell him where you heard about his site. His prices seem to be pretty reasonable.

10.10ct ametrine from Bolivia - 12.42 x 12.38 x 9.47mm - "millenium" cut - loupe clean - 100% natural

I have no idea what I am going to do with it

It could be natural gemstone but has it been treated to get that colour with an even split right down the middle? I’m just curious because it seems too perfect.

very pretty! and sparkly

do what i do with most of my stones, keep in jars in a "treasure" chest and take them out and play with them when you need an extra sparkle in your day

It is guaranteed 100% natural and untreated in anyway and he has a no questions asked return policy, so I'll see what it looks like when I get it. It is my understanding that he had them cut in Bolivia and got them directly from a cutter that he works with down there. He has some others that aren't so "perfect" looking, but I liked this one the best.

I'll be sure to put "real pics" on here when I get it.

He did tell me that he tests all of the stones before he puts them on his website.

I have been reading up on ametrine and am too afraid to buy any for the following reasons:
1. Razor sharp boundary between the yellow and purple regions.
2) The colours are uniform with no growth lines or stratifications parallel to crystal boundaries.

How are you going to check that the ametrine is indeed natural and untreated? Do you have the right resources with the right tools to check out the stone?

Good question - I''ll email him and ask him and let you know what he says.

Quote:
Gem-quality synthetic ametrine has been produced commercially in Russia since 1994, by hydrothermal growth from alkaline solutions. Faceted synthetic ametrine has many similarities to its natural counterpart from Bolivia. For the most part, however, the synthetic ametrine obtained for this study could be identified by a combination of characteristics, including growth features such as twinning and color zoning. EDXRF chemical analyses revealed higher concentrations of K, Mn, Fe, and Zn than in natural ametrine. IR spectra of the synthetic citrine portions showed more intense absorption in the 3700-2500 cm-1.range compared to natural ametrine; the synthetic amethyst zones showed a weak diagnostic peak at 3543 cm-1.

As you can see, both heat enhanced natural quartz and synthetic ametrine are optically and physically like natural ametrine, requiring sophisticated gemological testing to distinguish one from the other.

hmm his prices seem a little too low for me....

I dont buy ametrine or quartz from someone I dont know inless it is under 100$ because of the risk of synthetics. I have no idea of your stone is synthetic or not but it is pretty! I bet it sparkles!

Grats on your new stone!

I emailed him and asked him what tests he does and this is what he sent back:

"I run all standard test on every stone that I buy. Test are conducted using a refractometer, polariscope, spectroscope, dichroscope, ultra violet, microscopic and dark-field microscopic examination, immersion cell using diffused light and specific gravity. I guarantee all my items with a no questions asked full money back guarantee. I stand behind all my gems with my reputation on the line all the time".

I just sent an email to http://www.pacificgemlab.net/ which is close to where I live to find out how much it costs to get a stone verified as 100% natural just for curiosity. If it''s not too expensive, I think I''ll take this stone and an emerald that I got (from a different seller) that has a UGL cert that says it''s only treatment is cedar oil to find out if they are what they are supposed to be....

I''ll let you know what I find out.

Even if it may be natural, the photo looks color enhanced. I hope it turns out to be a nice and natural gem. Some hydrothermal gems can only be deemed natural by a lab with expensive equipment, so be leary of dealers that say they can tell any synthetic gem.

I appreciate all of the heads'' up and I''m hoping it looks as good as the picture also.... I also hope the lab I emailed can test the stones without costing an arm and a leg.

I should have it by the end of the week (hopefully) so I will definitely take pictures. I have a pretty decent camera with a nice macro lens, however, I''m having a heck of a time with the lighting, but I''ll do my best.

Well, I''ve never seen anything like that before. Can''t wait to read what you think about it!

I got the stone in the mail today and it is a gorgeous stone.. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get pictures of it all over the house, but they all turned out dull, then the sun co-operated and came out for about 10 minutes - so I hauled my camera and tripod out to try to get some shots in the sun. They didn''t turn out that great, but they do give you an idea of the incredible colors and the faceting and I tried to get it from a bunch of different angles. Please pardon the number of pictures, but it''s one of those highly faceted stones that are very difficult (at least for me) to photograph. I truly think if I had the correct set up (and better photographic ability), I could get it to look almost like the vendor "glamor shot".

I also got an email back from the lab in Portland and they said they could give me a verbal on whether or not the stone was synthetic or 100% natural for a reasonable price. They also said they would tell me whether or not the stone was worth paying for a written appraisal, if it turns out to be natural. Soooo, I will taking it into Portland (hopefully next week) to see "what I have"!

I''m not sure what the pinks spots are, some kind of reflection I guess, but this shot showed the faceting on the back pretty well, so I decided to post it.

on my hand in the sun.... the stone''s colors are almost more vivid out of the sun, but the indoor pictures all had a yellow cast to them.

and lastly next to the vendor "glamour shot" The purple band is closer in color to the vendor photo indoors, but the sun turns it more of a purple.

Oh my, that is absolutely beautiful....what are you going to do with it?

ooooh, so lovely! Sandiego lady is right, rose or yellow gold for sure.

That is so pretty. I am a little envious. You cant keep that in a jar, you are going to have to set it so you can stare it wherever you are.

very pretty, rose gold would be amazing! can'' wait to hear what the lab says.

Thanks! I''d love to set it in a rose gold pendant, but then I would have to buy a rose gold chain (which I don''t own) so I will probably default to yellow gold. My yellow gold chain is medium weight, but shorter than I would like with this large of a stone, so I may save up for a heavy / longer chain that I could then use with several different stones. I have a heavy, longish wg chain, but I don''t see this stone in wg at all.

I''ll be sure to let you guys know what the lab says when I take it in next week.
