I'm looking at this lovely reddish orange IF 2.1 carat, untreated, supposedly Namibian Spessarite. I've placed a bid on the auction site and I'm currently winning. I'm curious of your opinions on this stone. Do you think it would look brownish in person? Either way, if I win the auction I don't think I'll get hurt on the price, lol. even though i can see your brown concerns its such a beautiful shade I'd go for it
what colour is the setting going to be ?

I'm honestly not sure if I will set it. It may just get added to my collection of loose stones. If I do set it, it will probably be a white gold halo setting. Won't decide for sure until I see it in person.

It’s a very brownish coppery color. If mandarin garnet is not the color you’re going for, that is typical spessartite color. It should be very inexpensive.

It is very inexpensive. I've only bid $17 on it. I just thought it would be nice to add a spessarite to my collection and you can't beat the price.

What will you do with it? Might only be $17 but that $17 could go towards something you like more, will set and enjoy it?

I honestly don't know what I'd do with it yet. I have several loose stones that I've collected and haven't had set. I just like collecting them.

I'd guess it will probably be a lot browner than that photo, is that a colour you like? One of my dealer friends had this parcel of top coloured rough, but after it was cut it lightened a number of shades to that vivid orange a lot of spess are. Sometimes if you don't mind inclusions in them you can get these vivid colours for O.K prices;

Oh my, thats a nice orange. And oh the perils f buying rough. Any idea if there’s any more rough? :)

I’d assume the ebay listing is brown in person, unless its a seller anyone has experience with.

Reminds me of lava. I have a spessartite that color, not a true mandarin, but a very nice orange. It’s the rectangle in this pic.

My favorite color of spess is the lava red/orange, like the rectangle one in your pic. LOVEEEEEE!

Actually the one in the middle is more of the trade ideal (very old stone) for a mandarin even though it’s a lousy picture. It’s that orange traffic cone color. Hey, but we all like what we like. ;)2

The rectangle sits loose in the bank. I reused the mounting for a spinel. I just can’t get into brownish gems. o_O

The lighter pieces you can see on top ended up about the colour of your middle ring to the ring on your right and the rest either the colour of your middle ring stone, or or a colour somewhere between the middle ring and your stone in the left ring (but there was no brown just different shades of bright orange). They lightened substantially after cutting most ended up closer to your middle ring and are what is considered "trade ideal" in colour..... it was a bit of a shame IMHO because the rough looked like candy, I kind of preferred it before it was cut =)2 I have about 10 or so pieces that were cut from that lot.... I didn't buy the rough, I waited until it was all cut and picked out the best stones.

Lol yeah, I know my preferences for spess color definitely don't match trade ideal. Makes sense given my weird affinity for brown stones :)

You have to be careful of overly photoshopped enhanced color images on eBay. I hope it looks like the photo. Good luck.

Pictures???? :D

What type of lighting do you take photos of spess in? My Iphone camera really hates and takes terrible photos of oranges and reds.... In my last photo below the orange stone indoors looks brown in the pic, it shifts to a neon darker but really bright orange in real life no brown....

They are way nicer than this, I managed to find 8 of the 10;

I'm also the person that bought that incredibly expensive spess that John B precision cut and had for sale several years ago..... I bought it on sale and haggled and the price still hasn't caught up to what I paid for this stone, John claimed at the time not only was it "trade Ideal" but the best spess he's ever seen. Me, I probably like them a whisker darker in colour (some of the stones from the lot that got cut are the same colour or IMHO better) but the cut makes it sing;

Nice stones!! Thank you for the pictures!

As for your question about what camera I used, that’s a really old camera shot, before I had an iPhone!! I had a flip phone at the time. I think that pic was taken with an older model Nikon. My poor spessartite are at the bank. The big trillion is a six carat Tanzanian gem from Gene. The middle stone was from a gem show around 20 years ago. The rectangle was from Jason Brimm who procured it from Gem-Earth on eBay. I almost returned it because I thought it was too brown. The current orange love of my life right now is an orange Welo opal I need to reset. I also have a neon orange Mexican fire opal, but no colorplay. The Welo is TDF though!!

I'm the same nothing is set because to be truthful I'm not a garnet girl at all...... spinels, give me spinels :lol::lol::lol: and then probably things like sapphires and even tourmalines are all higher on my list of what I like than most of the garnets I own. And it's funny you should say that because I have a decent sized bright orange Mexican Fire opal cab that wasn't expensive at all - that is by far my favourite orange of everything I own. :shifty: :lol::lol::lol:

I love tsavorite, mint and demantoid garnets. Red or orange garnets don’t do much for me either, although I do love my pear mandarin. I should wear it more often. It’s too bad humans only have ten fingers!!:cry2::P2

i love orange
i had no idea so many gemstones were orange
thanks you all :appl:
