Good afternoon - I'm starting my journey into researching buying a 1.5-2.0ct marquise over the coming years. Although I currently own a .33 marquise I really don't know what I'm looking for / against in terms of a good cut.

So can anyone have a look at this stone and advise is this a good style of marquise and if there are anything I should look for (ie have no clear idea of what a bowtie looks like etc). Thank you!

Can you list the things that you want in this upgrade? Like you choose a near flawless F, are those traits the most important? Is size? What is your price range?

ETA:marquise style is subjective to the purchaser, some like them slender, chunky, moval looking, antique and modern looks. Just have to see what you gravitate towards

the stone in the images is a pretty example of a modern slender marquise cut diamond

it's slender tapered shape is quite flattering on the hand

marquise cut diamonds do tend to concentrate color in the tips. so staying within the narrower colorless range will ensure that your marquise cut stone is nice and white even at the tips

i love the dramatic flair of a marquise cut!

I really haven’t seen enough marquises in the different variations to decide on actual shape. My current one is a stock standard slender tapered one. It really will come down to what I can get for my budget.

I’m not set 100% on an actual setting yet. Part of me loves a bezel east-west setting, the other part of me is keen to get the stone set into a updated version of my ER.

At the moment I’m more focussed on getting to understand the variations in colour / clarity / minimizing the chances of any bow tie effect.

We have minimal jewellery choices in Australia however in normal times we travel to the US at least once a year so will use this time to educate myself.

The stone will be set in yellow gold with either white claws / bezels.

I would prefer a larger stone that is eye clean and as white as possible - in saying that, again I’m only just starting to look and have found that sometimes I cannot see huge colour variations in some forum member’s pictures they post.

I’m budgeting around $12-$15k USD for the stone at this stage.

darkness across the belly of a marquise could be the much dreaded and highly undesirable bow tie effect OR it could be obstruction

just post the marquise(s) that you are, seriously, considering and plenty of people will offer their opinions to you

you ought to set it anyway you'd like as you will be wearing the ring

personally, i love a marquise in a north south orientation, much like your original ring

Ok well a couple that I had bookmarked:-

3.Not sure if this has the bow tie - this is why I’m starting to try to work out what I am supposed to be looking for? http://www.diamondsbylauren.com/index.php/jewelry/204ct-i-vs1-marquise-diamond-r9110

These are a few I had bookmarked trying to see if I could determine what cut / colour / clarity of marquise I preferred - and if ultimately I was choosing quality?

Longer shape marquise diamonds likely will have more bow tie than rounder shape ones. A bow tie is associated with lighting and obstruction as well as basic to the shape of marquise.

A good photographer can make the bow tie virtually disappear with the right lighting. A bow tie can be concealed in a photo. You can't tell until you get a diamond into your own lighting what it will do in many cases. I think it is a part of their beauty and not a big problem.

Here is a link to some proportion information located in Pricescope which covers marquise and three other fancy shapes: Not everyone will totally agree with it, but it is useful for screening.

Thank you David for the links. I’m reading as much information as I can as well as looking at stones - which due to COVID is restricted to online at present.

Fox, thank you - that stone is gorgeous but I’m not ready to buy just yet, still in the research stage.
