Early this week I posted my pics and since it was an uncertified stone, I was eager to get it appraised so we knew the specs and can put our minds to ease. Well, I went to Benson's (since it is near my job downtown) and here is the hamburger story...

Since it was uncertified he agreed to have me come that day so we could put our minds at ease. When I sat down his first comment was this is a pretty nice stone ... and literally it went down hill from there after I told him that I purchased it at the gem show. He said "why did you not purchase here...blah blah blah..." (adding that purchasing online is not a good idea). He then proceeded to just tear my ring apart. Stating that it has a lot of stuff in it and that the setting was not properly set, that my stone has medium pink flourescence, he, also, said that the measurements were really off and that my 1.46 reflected more like a 1.2 - 1.3. I was not a happy camper. I then asked him if he could show me a 1.25 stone ... so when I compared that to my 1.46 I said "mine looks bigger"...and he basically just brused it off. I asked him if he could show me a 1.5 stone so I could compare mine to that...then another customer walked in and he politely excused himself and tended to the customer. When the "appraisal" was completed he said if you are not happy with that stone, then let me know and I can work with you...blah blah blah.

I immediately called Martin Fuller! I don't know if it was instinct or panic or what....but I just did not feel that the guy at Benson was right. When I talked with Martin I was paniced and he calmly said..."Everyone feels this way after...you second guess, etc. etc., come and in, and I will look at it but I think everything will be fine") When we went there today...I just can not express that if you are in the Metro DC area...pay the $175 and be prepared to walk out with a smile. Not only does Martin know what he is doing (he has done analysis on the Hope Diamond) ... he, also, has the BEST customer service!!! His wife is a sweetheart and just greeted us with the warmest personality. Martin himself is just a doll...answering all of our questions and giving us all the information we needed in order to confirm that for my baby's budget we got the best that we could get and did PRETTY DAM GOOD!!! Martin commented that the setting was done very well and that it was very nice and after asking if it was a Ritani.

When he looked at the stone he confirmed that it was an H by looking at crystals and putting it in a machine. He did measurements that were much more in line with the actual weight (unlike the guy from Benson's who had measurements tht did not even sound right after looking at stones online). And what makes my stone an I is an unfinished cavity on my stone. Martin explained that what probably happened was that if they would have finished that section it would have caused the stone to be smaller and in the end does it not interfere with the brillance of the stone. He commented that the cut was done well so it masked the unfinished part underneath. The depth is a bit thicker than I would have wanted...but everything else is pretty dead on! And ... my ring has no flourescence ...(and definitely not pink flourescense)
He, also, confirmed that my fiance paid right on the money and to boot we got a great looking ring (I knew that party already)! So...

if you are in the DC area... go to Fuller, when we left my fiance said...I know we paid alot...but I feel like it was a bargin.

The specs on my ring are as follows:
1.46 round brilliant cut
7.00-7.02 x 4.55
Depth: 64.9
Table: 56
Girdle: Thick, faceted
Clarity: I1
Color: H
Symmetry: VG
Polish: VG
Culet: None
Flour: None

...and here are more pictures of my ring

This is a picture of the unfinished cavity. Personally, I love it...I will always know it ''s mine :) And it makes it feel so much more natural.

Wow, that is lucky... if the only inclusion is the little dent (which isn''t an inclusion, so to speak). Can you see any of it face up?

The ring is so lovely

Happy new year!

Beautiful Ring and stone! Congrats!

It''s a beautiful ring and I''m so glad that you went with your gut and had it appraised by Martin Fuller. Benson''s obviously had something to sell you and that was where he was coming from. Wear that beauty in good health, it really is beautiful!

I wish you well,

Bridget

That is such a neat inclusion, it looks like a bear or a dog eating some steak or something! I know I am nuts but that's what it looks like to me

This coming from someone who likes to spot pictures in the clouds.....there's a bunny rabbit, there's a boot.....

From the top, you can''t see a thing. I have looked at it over and over again & all you can see is the pretty cuts of the facets. From the top you don''t know where the cavity is ... you really have to turn the ring over to see where it is (and the cavity almost looks like a stamp because it is in the shape of a small rectangle). Blown up at at a higher magnification you start to see the feathers and there are 2 clouds. I can see some of it at 10x mag (as I saw it when I looked through a loop); however, all clean with the naked eye

It has sort of made me appreciate more how unique each diamond is. Also, when you see some of the beauties on pricescope you appreciate that you don''t have to go VS1 or higher to get a real beauty (yeah, I learned that here) I was able to get a sparkler for lots less with getting a carat and a half to boot (because in the end...I knew that going I1 clarity was not a bad thing or cheap thing).

Blissful in VA

This is why it is important to use an appraiser who does not sell diamonds.

I''m so glad you found Martin. I also used him when I had my diamond (purchases at a jewelry show years back) set in an upgraded setting. He spend so much time with me answering all my questions, and the pictures he took for my appraisal were outstanding. If I had any doubts or questions about my diamond (and setting) before meeting with him, my mind was put at ease by the time I left. Well worth the $$ in my opinion.

Your ring looks beautiful.

In the end, all that matters is that you and your fiance are happy and you both love it.

NatLaw, I think you learned why we always say to get an appraisal done by an "independent" appraiser. They have nothing to sell you, which was the opposite of the first guy

.

By the way, the ring is stunning!

I could not agree with you more Diamondlil. Martin put our mind at ease and we both love the ring!!!

I can''t wait to use him for other treasures in my jewelry box :)

Totally!!! understand now about the independent appraiser (and about going to someone recommended and getting what you pay for). I would have never thought it ... thinking what does one have to gain or lose at this point ...

Congratulations, natlaw! Gorgeous ring!

BTW, I agree with with Lorelei: the inclusion looks to me like a cute little Yorkie sniffing around for a treat!

Lol, to me it looks like a pig sniffing the ground

You know what...it does look like a Yorkie :) LOL :)

I love yorkies! LOL, I think you should name it.

Wow I love that setting, did you have it custom made?? It''s lovely!

You definitely learned the difference between an independent appraisal and one done by someone who also sells gems, and just wants to tear your stone apart! Kudos on calling Martin! Enjoy your ring!

What a gorgeous ring natlaw. So glad you found Martin. I love the setting, enjoy!!!

I love your new ring! The setting is great and the stone looks great too. And congrats on finding a wonderful I-1!

I''m glad that you got to Martin and had him reassure you about your ring.

Yup, like everyone has said, it''s important to go to an INDEPENDENT appraiser.

I am cracking up here, it DOES look like a Yorkie or a pig with a ham bone or treat! Reminds me of the story of the Christmas diamond with the inclusion that looked like a little man in a sleigh!

Mara...it is a custom made setting. I wanted an eternity setting with stones that would go all around. My ring finger is a 7 1/4 ( I have really big knuckles). I could have probably gone with a 7 but I accounted for the summer swelling.

It is funny, I get so many compliments on the fact that the diamons go all around. People are astonished! I have heard 3 times...the diamonds go all around...wow.

I think your diamond and ring are great. If you love it, it''s perfect!! My diamond has a small garden or carbon inside, I love that I will always know it''s mine, too! Isn''t it great to have a signature characteristic in your diamond that is ALL your''s? Congratulations on such a beautiful ring!

Trying to decide what the "dent" is shaped like is somewhat of a Rorschach test.

Your ring is beautiful. Enjoy!

Natlaw, it''s soooo pretty! I''m glad you were pleased.

Natlaw,

I am glad you like your ring. It''s beautiful. I''m sorry you had a bad experience with the other jeweler.

Martin Fuller is a great guy. I have been going to him for appraisals for about 10 years. His customer service can''t be beat. You can tell he''s a guy who really loves his work. He makes me want to become a gemologist.

Wear your ring in the best of health and happiness.
