Here's our playlist so far. As you can tell, I favor upbeat and faster tempo songs. But I know we need some slow dance songs, too. I want to stick mainly to songs that will be familiar to those from 18-90, so mainly 1970s and older, with a few exceptions as noted. I want to stay away from anything modern, country, hip hop, or rap.

I'd like to add in more Sinatra/Dean Martin-type music, but I'm not as familiar with it as I am with 60s pop. What are some good slow dance songs from that era?

Brown eyed girl - Van Morrison
Obla di obla da -Beatles
After all - Peter Cetera
Somewhere over the rainbow - Isreal Kamakawiwo
Daydream believer - Monkees
God Only Knows - Beach Boys
Sloop John B - Beach Boys
Melt With You - Modern English
At last - Etta James
Twist and shout - Beatles
When i'm 64 - Beatles
Time of your life - Green Day
It's the end of the world as we know it - REM
Uncle John's band - Grateful Dead
I got you babe - Sonny and Cher
I've got my mind set on you - George Harrison
Fields of gold - Sting
You look wonderful tonight - Eric Clapton
What a wonderful world - Louis Armstrong
Build me up buttercup - The Foundations
Sunshine Superman - Donovan
Free Falling - Tom Petty
Catch the wind - Donovan

Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time in the World
Frank Sinatra - The Way You Look Tonight
As Time Goes By (there are lots of different versions - I like the one from the Casablanca soundtrack)

Newer, but easy to appreciate on first listen:
Josh Groban - When You Say You Love Me
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Here's some from our list:

Breathe – Faith Hill
Don’t Want to Close my Eyes—Aerosmith
Time After Time: Cindy Lauper
Crazy for You: Madonna
For my Wedding: Don Henley
I’ve got you Under my Skin: Frank Sinatra
Steppin Out with My Baby: Fred Astaire / Tony Bennet
Walk the Line: Johnny Cash
Leather and Lace- Stevie Nicks
I Hope You Dance -- Lee Ann Womack
Never Tear Us Apart: Inxs
Nothing Else Matters: Metallica
Taking you Home: Don Henley
The Best is yet to Come- Nancy Wilson
Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me: Faith Hill & Tim McCraw
Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis Presley
Crazy - Patsy Cline
She’s got a Way- Billy Joel
There You’ll Be – Faith Hill (for grandparents)
It Had to Be You – Frank Sinatra
Someone like You – Van Morisson

Hope that helps!

The first song that popped into my head was "Moon River" -- truly one for the older crowd! Some others:

When I Fall in Love
You Are So Beautiful (to me)
Always and Forever
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Chances Are
Can''t Help Falling in Love WIth You
Can I have this Dance (for the rest of my life)
The Way You Look Tonight
(You Look) Wonderful Tonight
You Send Me
Serende of Love (Love, this is my song...)

and a more obscure one, True Companion (Marc Cohn)

Good luck!

LOVE "At Last" by Etta James!!! I think if J and I do a first dance, it will probably be to that song. Looooove it.

First song that came to mind for you (which isn''t really a slow song exactly) is L.O.V.E. by Nat King Cole. It''s a great song, though, so I think you should add it even if it isn''t a true slow song.

Others that might work:

Summertime--Sarah Vaughan
My Funny Valentine--Sarah Vaughan
Someone To Watch Over Me--Sarah Vaughan
God Bless The Child--Ella Fitzgerald
In A Sentimental Mood--Coltrane or Ellington
Fever--Sarah Vaughan (sorry, she just has THE best voice!)
What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life--Frank Sinatra
Unforgettable--Nat King Cole
Fly Me To The Moon--Frank Sinatra
The Best Is Yet To Come--Frank Sinatra
Misty--Ella Fitzgerald
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes--Judy Garland

Oh, I was dumb to segregate L.O.V.E. (or L-O-V-E or just ''Love'' depending on whose written it), since some of the Sinatra songs I put up (like ''Fly Me To The Moon'') aren''t slow songs either. Not thinking, still sleeping...

I may be repeating others but here are a few:

True Companion (if you''ve never heard the song, it''s beautiful, and you can check it out on my thread, "Which song for our wedding DVD.")

It Had To Be You

Any Harry Connick, Jr. or Michael Buble song

My Best Friend by Tim McGraw

Breathe by Faith Hill

Faithfully by Journey

I Don''t Want to Miss a Thing by Aerosmith

Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan

Into the Mystic by Van Morrison

Me too! That''s one of the contenders for our first song! I love it!

I LOVE Into the Mystic!

another one for the older crowd is As Time Goes By (from Casablanca).

Franks Sinatra Songs:
(up beat slow songs)
Check to Check
Night and Day
Too Marvelous for Words
Love is Here to Stay
Day by Day
(slower slow songs)
I''ll Be Seeing you
All the Way

Dean Martin:
You''re nobody Till Somebody Loves You
Sway
You Belong to Me

If you want something along the same vein, you could also find some nice Cole Porter Songs:
Begin the Beguine
I''ve Got Your Under My Skin
I Get A Kick Out of You
I Love You

Anything from Michael Buble, especially his self titled album (released 2003) is good too.

Bump and Grind by R. Kelly?

All of these have been performed by SEVERAL artists.. I put a mixture. But FYI Carly Simon has a jazz standard CD called Moonlight Serenade. Rod Stewart has about 5 CDs in a collection. Of course there are the obvious Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, and Harry Connick Jr.

It Had to Be You is my favorite jazz standard..
At Last- Etta James
I Only Have Eyes For You- Carly Simon
Moonglow- Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Carly Simon.. take your pick!
Night and Day- Frank Sinatra
Unforgettable- Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole
They Can''t Take That Away- Rod Stewart
What a Wonderful World- Loius Armstrong or Iz
The Very Thought of You- Michael Buble

LOL, granny would love that! Hehehe.

Have you considered Elvis? I Can't Help Falling In Love with You is a good familiar one.
Love Me Tender is also popular-and there is a BEAUTIFUL arrangement by Nora Jones in case you'd like something different

Here are some slow ones we used that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

When you Say Nothing at All Alison Krause
I'll Do It for You (The Robin Hood Song) Bryan Adams
I Will Always Be Right There Bryan Adams
You're in My Heart by Rod Stewart

Ours are mainly country with a few mainstream ones thrown in, so here''s what I can remember off the top of my head...we are making our final song selection this weekend, I think, but I left my wedding binder at work...

Keith Urban: Once in a Lifetime Love (Rusty dedicated this to me on the radio last year when he was in Israel for a month!

)
Josh Groban: When You Say You Love Me or With You (R left this CD for me to find after he left for Israel)
JoDee Messina or Celine Dion: Because You Loved Me
Rascal Flatts: Bless the Broken Road
Alison Kraus: When You Say Nothing at All
Anne Murray: Could I have this Dance?
Carrie Underwood: I''ll Stand By You (Originally done by The Pretenders)
Rod Stewart: You''re in My Heart
Colbie Caillat: Bubbly
Tim McGraw: Not a Moment too Soon
Ty Herndon: Living in a Moment
Tracy Byrd: Keeper of the Stars
Michael Buble: Home
Lonestar: Amazed
Dixie Chicks: Cowboy Take Me Away
Bryan White: Between Now and Forever

I''m sure there''s more, but I can''t remember them all when I''m this tired!

We are having a family friend sing Steven Curtis Chapman''s "I Will Be Here" in lieu of the traditional wedding march. It''s a beautiful song. And for my dance with my dad, we''re using "Cinderella," also by Steven Curtis Chapman.

My all time favorite Frank Sinatra song is "Young At Heart."

The Maker Said Take Her is my all time favorite Alabama song...it''s not really slow, but I love it anyway.

I always liked "Every Time I Close My Eyes" by Babyface.
or some Toni Braxton songs

When I married my ex in 2000, I had a Motown reception. All Motown and Motown-flavored music. Most of the guests were 40 and older, and it went over really well - but younger guests also had a good time. Some songs you can use that fit your description:

Sinatra - Luck Be A Lady
Nat King Cole - Unforgettable
Chris DeBurgh - Lady In Red
Percy Sledge - When A Man Loves A Woman
Temptations - Just My Imagination
Grover Washington - Just The Two Of Us
Jeff Healy - Angel Eyes (some people think he''s country - he''s not)
Billy Joel - She''s Always A Woman or Just The Way You Are
Santana - Black Magic Woman (people who can tango or salsa like this one, and it''s slow)

You''re gonna laugh.....but at my friend''s wedding two years ago, her grandmother got TRASHED! Not in a bad way....she just had way too much wine and was kind of cute, dancing with all the young guys and whatnot. But at the end of the reception, the DJ played "Who''s Makin'' Love To Your Old Lady (While You Was Out Makin'' Love)." With the dance that goes with it. If you don''t know the dance I am referring to, it''s kind of like the Macarena, only a little more risque. And whaddya wanna know? GRANNY got up with all of us bridesmaids and was doing the dance ! It was freaking hysterical, this little old 80-something drunk lady! And my friend''s grandfather (who was not drunk), said, "Ruthie, come and sit down." And she said, "Frank, I might be old, but I ain''t dead. I''m not sitting down! I wanna dance, dammit!"

YOU GO, GRANDMA!
