Need opinions...we are definitely getting ivory chair covers and black organza sashes.

Would you do black organza overlays too? Or just the sashes? Wedding is August 08, outdoor ceremony, indoor reception. Reception hall is pretty ugly, beige everything (walls and curtains). Centerpieces will be pink flowers, probably all short, possibly high/low.

So....option #1 with overlay:

ETA: Thanks for helping...only other brides would care about something so silly!!!!!

Option #2 without overlay:

My vote is for Option 1 - with the black overlay.

I guess it could be argued that black overlays would be too much for a summer wedding and just wrong... but I think with all the beige in the room it would not be too heavy looking and would make the pink flowers pop... so the poppin'' pink flowers would brighten up the black (imho)

I like option one also. Is your reception in the evening?

sera - true, the black would make the flowers stand out more for sure! i like the organza cuz its still sheer, so it's a little less heavy than satin would be.

sap - yep, reception will start around 6. it stays light here till about 10 in august though, so it won't be dark till the dancing starts. we'll have a candle on the tables too.

thanks for your help! we already booked the black overlays, but i can still cancel. i hadn't seen pictures of both with and without the overlays together, so seeing them side by side i started to wonder if the black overlays were too much for the summer.

ETA the floors of our venue are beige too (beautiful linoleum of course)...the floors in the pictures are both dark, so maybe that's making it look a little heavier to me too.

This is probably the most lame question ever...but I''m a dork...what does ETA mean?
(After all, to me it means "Estimated Time of Arrival, but that just doesn''t fit).

For what it''s worth...I like both, but I like the sound of "popping". Whatever makes the centerpeces POP is my choice too.

I like the overlay, I think it adds an extra pop. Plus I love pink white and black together.

Thank you Sera...I feel like I just graduated!! It all makes sense now. Almost like the first time I had to ask my darling daughter "What is lol?"

hahahahaha it took me about 2 months to figure out what it stood for too!! i understood that it was like an afterthought, but i couldn''t for the life of me think of what it meant. one day i just had an epiphany!!!

yay 4 to nothing in favor of the overlays. thanks!!!

Yayayayay, 4-0 to getting laid.

My bad......

Justice Future Mrs Polka Dot, dissenting (sorry, corny law school has gotten the best of me...)

I kind of prefer them without the black overlays, but I think both ways look nice! I guess I like the way flowers look against white or ivory linens, because I feel like they pop more that way. I don't know...I can't explain it - something about black tablecloths is just weird to me. I'm just biased towards light table cloths and can't explain why! Esp for the summer, I would say. Also, does black show crumbs more?

What if you instead did white/ivory linens but then did black napkins at each setting. Then you could tie in with the pink florals by tying a pink ribbon around the black napkin? Maybe a polka dot ribbon!?!

Also, I just googled and I think I am not TOTALLY opposed to black linens, but maybe it's the sheerness of it? What about a solid black linen? Look at this cute picture with black and pink - http://www.partywarehouse.co.nz/test/catalog/gallery_images/Black%20&%20Pink%20Theme.jpg

Also, Kara, this is unrelated to linens but these cocktail napkins made me think of you!! http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/damask--black-paper-luncheon-napkins--pack-of-20

This napkin/ribbon combo is cute! And it''s black, white and pink...!

I guess I''ll be the first and like #2. With beige walls and wall treatments etc I think black overlays will overpower. Somehow I think the picture in option 1 has benefited from the black and white paintings on the wall and dark floor.

I like it without the overlays better, only because the organza is so sheer that it looks gray and not black. If you are worried about too much ivory, I second FMPD in saying add some black napkins. You can even open up a black napkin in the middle of the table under your centerpieces.

Another vote for option 2. I think sometimes the best way to disguise an ugly room is to do so gently. If you fight the room too much (in this case with lots of black over the beige), the contrast can become the focus of attention instead of your tables/decor/flowers. Not sure if that makes sense to anyone else. In the photos, the black overlays compliment the room well, which itself has lots of black.

I''d stick to smaller black accents - chair ties, maybe napkins, etc - and leave off the overlays.

Or, new idea - maybe a narrow table runner instead of an overlay? Same effect of black under the flowers, but not nearly the same table coverage.

I vote #2 without the overlay. I think it looks elegant and sophisticated and fresh and clean. I think the overlay..sorry...looks more tacky, dark and not fresh. i think black in summer is great! Although I think the black overlay makes it too heavy for summer. Even with the Ugly beige room, I think the beige tables and fresh pink flowers will still make it all pop and look summer fresh!!

Are you having a black cake?....I love the look and it is gorgeous....However I have to tell you.. I went to a wedding last fall and it had black frosting. Everyones teeth and lips were stained black for a little while. Older people had the worst time as people were afraid to say. grandma....you have black between your teeth and on your lips. If you spilled it on your clothes it was awful. Maybe it was the way it was made though....Just was kind of comical to look around and see people who had no idea it was doing that to their mouth. As word got out people were more careful as they ate it.

ahhhh!! what happened overnight?? hahaha daytime people like the non-overlay look.

i was sort of leaning towards no overlays when i first saw the two pictures together. then last night people were saying they liked the overlays better....so i was leaning that way....also i know FMIL likes the overlays....but now i''m torn!!

FMPD - that picture you posted is super cute, but i think unfortunately it''s either the sheer overlays or no overlays. our venue only has white or ivory tablecloths, and the place we are renting the chair covers/sashes from only has organza and satin overlays....and i''m not feeling satin at all!!! also, our venue does not offer black napkins and there is no way they would let us bring in our own. but I really like your idea of tying a ribbon around the napkins....that is something we could definitely do. what if we got black organza to tie into bows around the napkins? would that tie in the black chair sashes a little better?

those napkins are so adorable!!! i actually saw some similar ones at a store here....but 20 napkins for $5 is a little nuts!! we would need at least 400 if each person has an average of 2 drinks....i think we are going to order some personalized cocktail napkins though, maybe some black, some white and some pink.

heraanderson - yes, you are right the black and white paintings help. the picture with the black overlays is from a casino night, which is exactly the look i was trying to avoid!! but i think if we have lots of flowers everywhere, it definitely won''t feel so casino-ish.

sabine - we will be having 12" mirrors under our centerpieces, so i''m not sure if a napkin under the round mirror under the centerpieces would look right? maybe if we could find some black rounds of fabric, like 18" diameter that could work?

ladyciel - yes, that is exactly what i was trying to avoid....making it look like an UGLY ROOM that has been forced to be something it isnt, hahahaha. table runner....i had thought about that too, but i''m not sure about a table runner on a round table. would you make them all parallel to each other? or make them all diagonal? or make them run in a line? I think the way the room is set up will be mostly 2 rows of tables, if that makes sense....

lauralu - hahahaha we are NOT having black cake. i think it''s a nice idea, but it just makes me think of a 40th birthday cake that says "Over the Hill". and the black icing in the teeth would be terrible!!!! i wonder if the people had tasted the black icing before they ordered it?? our cake is going to be mostly ivory with pink flowers on it...here is what it should look like, but the icing will be ivory instead of the peachy color shown here.
http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/loose-petal-cake?autonomy_kw=4 tier fluffy pink cake&rsc=image_54

thanks for everyone''s input!!! i just need to choose....now i''m leaning toward going with my first instinct and cancelling the overlays....but we still want the swags on the head table, and i asked if she could do the swirly thing on the cake table, where they kind of bunch up the overlay so its kind of cloud-like. our cake will be on a clear glass pedestal so i think that would look nice. or maybe we should see if she can do the swags on the cake table instead...?

LOL ooops I just saw the pic of all the color combos for black and white with the black cake and I never checked who had posted it. I assumed it was you!!! I was sooooooooooooooooooo anxious to reply about the frosting inhopes you might change your mind that I lost my head...LOL Oh I am so happy to know you are not doing the black icing cake....whewwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Good luck with everything and of coarse let us know what you decide! :)

Haha, so, I've been having the same exact debate about runners on round tables! I made the suggestion anyway, but I have basically the exact same problem. Two rows of tables, all lined up. My one thought was to have them on a diagonal line compared to the walls, but alternating direction, like NW-SE and NE-SW. But, that could end up looking like a big zig zag. Maybe completely random?

ETA: Ok, it's in a fancy slideshow thing so I can't figure out how to copy the pics, but there are several examples that might help you. Both runners on round tables, and different types of black overlays. http://www.wedding-creations-nw.co.uk/wc/Gallery.aspx

I personally do not like the overlays (and wouldn''t like the expense either). If you look at my wedding thread I got married in Aug 06 and had white chair covers with black satin ties (so close to what you are thinking). That can give you another visual.

ladyciel - that''s what I was thinking too, I think diagonal would look the best. Then you don''t have them looking too lined up or thought out, and I think the pattern will be less noticeable than if they were all in a straight line.

tacori- i''ll take a look at your pics, thanks!

I have decided against the overlays....FSIL and MOH both agreed with that it looks lighter and more summery without the overlays.

Thanks again for everyone''s help in an issue that only other brides could possibly give a crap about!!!

Been thinking about this for a little whie. Didn't want to respond without careful consideration.

No overlays here as well. I'm afraid they'll make the fairly dark venue of yours look even darker, whereas the white linens are a pop of clean freshness against all the brown.

Hey Kara...I''m in the no overlays group as well. I actually don''t mind dark table cloths sometimes, however I think that short overlay looks kind of awkward or unfinished or something. I think the black sash with the white table cloth will look great anyways!

Will you have round tables? Or are they square?

Either way, I think that the centrepieces will stand out on white as well, and will probably have a cleaner look than with the sheer overlay.
